Coues Deer

Alright so, no deer this evening but to my absolute shock and delight I saw 2 cow elk and a calf. When I saw the head of the bedded calf sticking out from under a juniper at 650 yards my first thought was “ that is too red to be a deer”. Unfortunately I left the phone case for my Olin rig laying on the seat of my truck. I wanted some video. Bummer, but oh well. There could have been a half dozen deer on another part of that slope and I would have never known it. I watched elk until dark. Didn’t have elk sightings on my bingo card for today being I was hunting in juniper and scrub oak country. I was sitting at 4800 feet the elk were at 4600.

Great day to be alive!

Quick update while I catch a breather, yesterday morning I saw a definite no brainer shooter at 600 yards. I was able to close the gap to 400 which is my max range with my setup (that will be resolved before my next trip) but couldn’t get a clear look. He fed off with a smaller buck and I lost him in the juniper amd oak brush. Needless to say I am still in the area.

If I don’t see another deer for the next 2 days and change I am happy with the trip. I have learned so much it is hard to put into words.
