Montana general big game combo help

I want to go to Montana next year and hunt Elk and Deer during the Archery season. I have a place to go in unit 411. I just dont know if I have to draw or just purchase the General Big Game Combo license. It gets confusing when reading the book. Was hoping some one here could shed some light on this. I just am not understanding the differnce all of the below is confusing. Thanks for the help.



General Elk License.
• Sept 07 - Oct 20 – Antlerless Elk. Archery Only Season.
• Oct 26 - Dec 01 – Antlerless Elk.

Elk Permit. Drawing only. Apply by March 15.
411-20: 200 permits. Only valid in HDs 411, 511 and 530.
• Sept 07 - Oct 20 – Either-sex Elk. Archery Only Season.
• Oct 26 - Dec 01 – Either-sex Elk.

900-15: 3700 permits. First and second choice only. Only valid in HDs 401,
403, 411, 412, 426, 447, 450, 500, 502, portion of 510 west of HWY
310, 511, portion of 520 south and east of West Fork of Rock Ck,
530, 570, 575, portion of 580 south of Sweetgrass Ck, 590, portion
of 701 north of Yellowstone River, south of HWY 12 and west of
Sumatra-Myers Road, 702, 704 and 705. ArchEquip Only.
• Sept 07 - Oct 20 – Either-sex Elk. Archery Only Season.
Elk B License. Drawing only. Apply by June 1.

004-80: 2800 licenses. Resident/Nonresident Elk B License. Only valid
on private and DNRC lands. Not valid on FWP WMAs. Valid in all
Region 4 HDs except HDs 401, 410, 417 and 455.
• Sept 07 - Oct 20 – Antlerless Elk. Archery Only Season.
• Oct 26 - Dec 01 – Antlerless Elk.

411-80: 400 licenses. Resident/Nonresident Elk B License. Only valid in
HDs 411, 511 and 530. Not valid on Natl Forest lands.

• Oct 26 - Dec 01 – Antlerless Elk.

900-80: 1000 licenses. Only valid on private lands outside Block Mgmnt

510 west of HWY 310, 511, portion of 520 south and east of West
Fork of Rock Ck, 530, 570, 575, portion of 580 south of Sweetgrass
Ck, 590, portion of 701 north of Yellowstone River, south of HWY

You must draw for a bull elk tag in 411 and you can use your general tag for a cow elk in Unit 411. The draw deadline was back in March. Right now, there are leftover cow tags for that area that go on sale on Monday, so you could have your general tag and a cow "B" tag and theoretically, shoot two cows in that unit if you bought one of the "B" cow tags.

For bulls, you will have to wait until next year and hopefully draw a bull tag.

Thanks for the information. Reading regs for different States can get confussing fast. I'm going to archery hunt for next year so it sounds like I need to put in for these tags. Is that correct?

Yes, correct. As and NR, your odds are way better to draw the 900-15 archery tag than it is the 411-20 rifle/archery tag.
