Mike Lee gives free land to Ski Town

Hopefully I have your attention.

Senator Mike Lee is looking to give away 24 acres of Dixie National Forest land, free of charge, to the town of Brian Head so they can expand infrastructure to handle planned growth of the ski hill.

I understand balanced use. I understand towns need infrastructure. But giving away what is essentially some of the most valuable real estate in the nation, free of charge, with no restrictions? I have a major problem with that. Especially the precedent it sets.

I firmly believe there need to be restrictions on the land, and at a minimum it be bought at fair market price. I would strongly prefer a long-term lease, with planned and bonded remediation of the site.

But considering who it is, I can’t help but see this as a political favor at the expense of the American people. Basically, theft. He has used up the balance of his public trust, and I feel it’s time he felt that.

Seems like a much better option. What happens when the resort goes bankrupt and up for sale? Or they gonna raise lift ticket prices to fund their new runs and lifts being built?

If this is an unavoidable eventuality, I believe it needs to be treated like a mine project- reclamation and remediation costs must be bonded in full up front. The impact of development in wild areas has been negligently overlooked for far too long.

Lease it? Maybe. Sell it? I’m less inclined. Give it away for nothing? Absolutely not. This is absurd. I would consider negotiating with him if he had come forward in good faith, but using this as his opening play disproves that he is.

Contact your senators. Tell them this is another “hell no” for Mike Lee.
