I can't believe the $1.7 billion dollars given to Iran from the Obama administration to stop their nuclear program didn't work and they used those funds to build a nuclear weapon. What is this world coming too when you can't trust a terror state sponsor?

Anything with an atomic number above lead (82) is radioactive, including all isotopes of Uranium. That said, Uranium is much less radioactive than plutonium and generally not an external hazard.

To be exact, yes, uranium 235 (the isotope that is fissile and thus the one you enrich for weapons production) does predominantly emit an alpha particle. Alphas can be shielded for by a sheet of paper so unless you ingest a bunch of U235, you aren’t going to suffer radiation damage. You will be in serious trouble given it is a heavy metal but no more so than ingesting any other heavy metal.

If the U235 is in solution as part of the enrichment step, then you don’t want that liquid to pool in a large amount and in the right geometry. If it does, then you could get a criticality event that releases radioactive material. It is more like a large chemical explosion and not a nuke bomb event.

You may or maybe not recall that it was due to the holding of Iran's money by the US since the 70's and it just happened to occur as US prisoners were released from Iran, considered by many to be related to the repayment of Iran's money. The following US President backed out of the Iran deal to stem nuclear weapon development. So here we are.

Older HTers - how long have you heard Iran is on the cusp of nukes?

Not to say that i think its impossible - but it seems like they have been "very close" as long as ive followed it (last 5 or so years).

Im a natural skeptic, but thats been only enhanced by the fact that the last middle eastern country with "weapons of mass destruction" .... didnt seem to have them.

All that i hope is that this doesnt involve the USA and our troops.

Not sure what your point is. Israel pays for those weapons, but I agree if your point is everything in Macro-politics comes with conditions. Downstream effects are important. They didn't think that deeply about derivative impacts in the Abraham Accords. Given Steve Witcoff has been assigned the task this time around, I don't expect much improvement. That region is complicated and volatile and I don't see it changing any time soon. The best thing the US can do is reduce our reliance on oil.
