Hearing Aid Use

So I searched threads and didn't find exactly anything that answers this. I do not where hearing aids. I went and got tested and they told me a hearing aid wont help since its inner ear. But I am pretty sick of not hearing. If there is any ambient noise I am done. Family at a restaurant. No chance. But what is putting me over the edge now is likely one of my favorite sounds. Turkey Gobbles. I literally watched turkeys gobble at 75yds thru binoculars and couldn't hear them because it was drizzling. The sound of the rain drowned out the gobbles. In the past I have tried walkers game ear. Well woody woodpecker sounded like he was on my head. And I had no idea which way to look when I heard a deer walking. I got to try something so my question for those with hearing aids:
  1. What kind do you have?
  2. Can you tune sounds in and out to hone in or everything is loud
  3. Are you directionally challenged with them when you hear a noise?

I wear Signia Stilettos. They help in certain situations. In a noisy room with lots of background sounds having a conversation with someone is still a challenge. Through the app you can turn them up or down, have them directionally focus, and make a few other adjustments. The audiologist programmed them to tune out sounds like wind and road noise. It dampens them but does not remove the sound. Do they improve my quality of life for as much as I paid for them? Meh, I'm not so sure. I wish they cured tinnitus, no hope there.

Tinnitus is miserable...

In my experience you will still have the same issues you will just be able to hear the gobble. I had them for three years while I waited on decisions about surgery... I don't have Tinnitus tho. My inner ear bones were destroyed by growths in my ear so there was no way for sounds to get down to my ear drums. Which unlike most people were still perfectly fine...I now have reconstructed ears 🤣 and hear around 90% unless it's my wife

I tried everything this place had to offer , it was almost all covered .
They start you at the bottom, cheaper units , and work their way up .
I tried them all , the directional ones, the ones they tuned out the static , all the way up to $1200 out of pocket and maxed out my insurance.
Took them back after two weeks.
In a restaurant or noisy spot they were torture, and nothing did away with the tinnitus.

Tinnitus in one ear is bad, having it in both is really bad. I don't hear many different tones and the higher pitches just aren't there. Deeper voices accompanied by my ability to read lips fairly well allows me to carry on a conversation if you're looking at me. I tried a couple different hearing aids all of them didn't help.

Hearing loss SUCKS! I truly wish that I could contribute something constructive to this thread. So here is what I will ad..

1. Tell your wife that you actually wish that you could hear her correctly the first time, so she understands (the above comic reminds me of that).
2. Consider getting a second opinion from a highly qualified Dr. My first Dr. sucked and audiologists are equally as useless other than selling and tuning equipment. Had I caught my problem sooner I wouldn't be facing surgery. Certain issues that cause hearing loss can also cause equilibrium issues and beyond if not treated early.

Good luck.

Well making light is all I got left at this point. Lol. Sounds like there is no good fix. I do get off participating in some stupid conversations by acting like I dont hear. So I do have that going for me.

Philips MiniRITE TR from Costco. Tuneable (by technician) for media, crowds, certain sound frequencies etc. Moderately effective at home, less so in large groups or crowds. I don't have tinnitus so no feedback (pun intended) on that topic.

Hearing aids are a very sore subject for me right now. Been wearing them for 40+ years. I lost one last Nov. on a hunting trip - long story but a rope brushed my ear and hearing aid went into a fast moving creek while crossing.

I’m now on my 4th pair since that incident from different places, different brands, different types.

95% of hearing aids sold are what are referred to as BTE (Behind The Ear). And the audiologist makes the most commission on them. I hate em. I live outdoors during the day - wind noise, sweat, ear muffs, tractors, 4 whlrs and horseback are my life.

I am very hearing deficit. I cannot hear hardly anything without my hearing aids so I wear them from 5 AM until 10 PM on an avg. day. I have found ITE (In The Ear) is much more suitable for my life style.

I have been wearing a pair of ITE the last 2 weeks that truly are AI activated so when you go into a restaurant it is automatic. I spent this last weekend in the noisiest place on earth - 9 girls volleyball games (Granddaughter) at once in an auditorium. I could still carry on a conversation with my wife and people around me etc.

This is my 8th or 9th pair that I have bought. I have learned that you need to be up front with what your problem is and what you expect with your audiologist and take no BS or sales pitch from them - if your not satisfied 100% - take em back before the trial time is over and move on. If you’re not getting what you need, go someplace else.

These suckers I have are not on the Costco price level. I was having a fit over the pricing when my wife very quietly turned to me and asked how much I have in a new custom rifle, scope and suppressor that I’ll use how much compared to my hearing aids - that was pretty much the end of that conversation.

I’d be happy to answer any questions, concerns, or any other information if you want to PM me. Take care. I know what you’re going through - and it ain’t fun and it ain’t cheap.

I have been wearing Costco Rextons for over 5 years. Just got a new pair. Behind the ear. Great service, easy to tune/adjust with a phone app. Crazy warranty ! Replace for free the first year whether you lose them or fry one in the shower (yup, did it). $1600.00 for the pair including a pretty thorough hearing test. Probably one of the best things I’ve done for my marriage !!!
