Bought a new German Shorthair Pointer last June, and my kids named him Rudy. He has been a great addition to the family as well as bird hunting partner. While hunting with him yesturday, I couldn't help but think how amazing these hunting dogs are. In little over eight months this dog has gone from this little guy, to a hunting dog that is holding his point with the best of them. He even points the birds when they are placed in front of him for pictures. Now if I can just get him to focus solely on birds and stop pointing moles and gofers. Can't wait to get out again.

Great instincts. I have 2 GPS's. When drug companies put on shoots at the local preserves.... I just walk and work the dog. Not much fun in shooting, however, a ton of fun in working the dogs. In my opinion.... NOTHING more beautiful then one dog "honoring" another dog on point. Have lots of fun with that guy.

good luck to all
the dog

5 point, GSP's are a fun breed. Rudy is the second GSP I have owned. I also own an older Visala who is getting too old to hunt all day in the colder late season hunts. Both are great breeds for the Upland hunter. Pointingdogsrule, you are right about how special it is to watch one dog honor the point of another dog. Rudy "backed" my Visala twice this year and I am hoping to get a chance to reinforce that behavior a few more times with him next year.

Ya I'll admit, I wasn't completely sold on GSP right away. Not that Fritz is the best out there (he needs some work but I dont care about perfection, I just want him to have a good time and put some meat on the table) but of most the pointers I have hunted with, he seems the most motivated and have that true desire to hunt. Not that other dogs I have hunted with dont but you can really see it in the GSP. He just knows. I have more fun just watching him than shooting birds. Thats just the bonus.

If we had the room and time, I would consider another but right now, Fritz is just fine.

Rudy is far from perfection. He has done a good job with holding point, but his retrieving skills have a long way to go. Once he finds a dead bird, he just points them again. When I tell him to fetch he just picks up the bird, drops it, and then starts hunting for another bird to point. Looks like force retrieve training might be in his future. What puzzles me is that he will fetch a tennis ball all day long at home. There is always something to work on when it comes to training a hunting dog.

With labs, I always have the opposite problem, getting them NOT to retrieve and mouth my birds to save the feathers.

Ya he doesn't have an issue with retrieving birds, actually does very well with finding birds and always bringing them right to me. And sometimes live birds (house sparrows at my feeder:D) but he doesn't give too #^@$'s less about a ball or dummy. I can't get him to retrieve anything in the yard unless it has a sharptail skin wrapped around it.

Very nice! Great job. Hunting with a good dog is super rewarding. I wish I could justify a bird dog...
