Had an old injury on his left side of his body. Only thing I can think of that screwed up his right side that caused his back leg to not work. I figured he’d been wounded that year so I thought I’d shoot him to put him out of his misery only to find out it was an old wound that had healed and he was getting by fine. There’s actually 5 pts on that one screwed up side

Against The Grain - Hunt Talk Edition
This weekend was my 5 day weekend to hunt. On Friday, I went for what someone of my rotundness would be considered a death march. I proceeded to come down with the flu and was laid up Saturday and Sunday. This morning I got up, hell bent on achieving at least a half-assed morning hunt...

How’s this for the results of a MT deer permit that I burned 11 points on?
I’d do it all over again for the same results.
After realizing that chasing the glory units for less than sheep tag odds to shoot a mule deer, I party applied with my sons for a permit with the reputation of being a fun hunt if not a trophy hunt.
We got to spend Thanksgiving week in the wall tent chasing deer on the mountain and eventually all shot smaller bucks than we had passed during the hunt.
I probably would’ve left my tag unfilled if I had known that my buck was this size in total. Last hour of last day and I had to make a quick decision with the buck in profile before he hit the timber. I thought his main beam was one of his tines and fueled by a bit of excitement and adrenaline I shot him down.
No Ragrats. If I am going to kill a 2 1/2 year old buck, I am glad it wasn’t one with a lot of potential.
