Extreme hunting pressure in region 7.

The reason non residents come to Montana is because it has long seasons and they let you hunt deer with a rifle in the rut. If other western states had half the opportunity that Montana gives. You guys would have half the non resident pressure. Be careful what you ask for when it comes to limiting opportunity. Idaho thinks they are doing residents a favor with a 2 week rifle hunt in the middle of October. Good luck hunting day time hours when all the deer are nocturnal. It can be very frustrating at times. Idaho season structure looks like it was made by Hoyt and Matthews based on the overwhelmingly preference for OTC archery.

My trip to E MT was Nov 2-9 and it looked pretty much as it has for the last decade. I don't want to change my view by what I saw one year that I didn't see another, or vice versa, because I don't know what happened the week before or the week after. The Custer tends to be a circus, so I didn't go there. Overall, it was not terrible, but those public areas that look attractive certainly drew hunters. Saw the same Wisconsin truck multiple times. I will say the deer numbers still seem low. And I think NRs are far more likely to be on public than R hunters.

Reading through this all really makes me question if I just leap frogged from one CF in Colorado to a worse one in Montana… anyone need a JW electrician in Alaska that calls in sick all fall?

You didn’t realize hunting in MT was worse than CO? I thought that was common knowledge. I’ve found that CO and WY both have much better hunting. Wish I could spread the word.

Montana doesn’t draw nonresidents just because of rut rifle hunting. People come because Montana has predictable draws, tons of public land, and fewer alternatives in other states. Even if Montana changed its season dates, demand would barely move. And Idaho’s seasons aren’t designed by Hoyt and mathews,Idaho sets dates based on herd health, not industry influence.Saying October rifle hunts make all the deer nocturnal is an overstatement. Movement depends on weather and pressure, not just the calendar.😂😂😂

The longer this thread goes on the more it sounds like the “icefishing leads to prostitution” thread.

I was just talking with my MN hunting buddy about hunting eastern MT and he was thinking about buying a wheeled ice house and towing it west to use as a deer hunting camp….

I might need to clarify whose going to be staying there before I commit to that hunt…😏
