Dumb Injuries

Many years ago, I played hockey. In those days I found that a groin pull was just about the most difficult, nagging injury to get rid of. So in mid-November this fall, I was in Ashland, MT. I was hurrying to set up my camper in the NF while I still had a little daylight. I ran into a convenience store for some ice. The coolers were inside the camper, so rather than taking 30 seconds to pull out the steps, I just opened the camper door and stepped up. Yep, my left groin stretch and kinda went "ping". It hurt. It hurt the entire hunting trip. It was starting to get better, but now we have to go skiing every weekend... And its all sore and stiff again.

Surely I'm not the only Hunt Talked with a nagging, dumb injury. Just though I'd share.

I'm a walking dumb injury different most days...Achilles injury that I tend to aggravate about once a month after pushing a trail run or XC ski too hard...random bruises from power lifting...random bruises and pains after going full send while skiing...lower back pinch from lifting heavy logs.

I'm dealing with the Achilles dance too. Can't seem to shake it since March. I've got a hell of a lot of PT time and money invested, but it is still not right.

If you're going to be dump you gotta be tough... or something like that... it seems like I can't go a season without bruising the crap out of something

The other day I was cutting a funky shaped piece of wood on my table saw, the blade was WAY to high and The fence was less than two inches away. Luckily I was going slow but as I pushed the stock through I felt the blade barely start to touch my finger, no harm done. Another time I was chiseling a piece for a door and buried a razor sharp chisel in my thumb. That...hurt like a bitch!

I did a complete tear job on my left Achilles dancing at a wedding dance. I was on a weigh boat for a walleye fishing tournament last July and it was rough, we hit a wave and I hurt my lower back so bad that I needed an MRI and had to go see a spine specialist.

Ran my thumb through the dado blade in high school wood shop. Next semester I got the best score in the class on the safety test, though!:D. Thumb still hurts when its cold.

I was out playing fetch with our dogs 2 weeks ago and when I threw the ball it hit a post and bounced straight back at me. Like a dumb-@$$ I tried to catch it before my 70lb dog reached it and he ran right into my left leg sweeping it out from under me and spinning me around. The inside of my right knee hit the ground and I heard it pop. I couldn't get up for at least 10 minutes and the dogs thought I laying on the ground to play with them. They were jumping all over me and licking me to death. The knee swelled up pretty good.
It's much better now and I hardly walk with a limp at all.
It's the same knee I damaged roller skating when I was dating my future wife back in '83. It flairs up every now and then and I can usually count on a flair-up after packing out elk quarters.

I was getting in shape for a Javelina hunt 2yrs ago.Started walking every AM.,then hiking ,then just a week before the opener
decided I needed to start jogging.Blew my left knee out on the second day.Never got to hunt.Took until this year to completely
trust it.Missed 3 shots with my bow after all that time.DUMB.

Walking around with the achilles thing too. The Drs seems to think it's just damage to sheath, and lots of money with pt will "cure" it. 2 months later, I'm still walking with a bit of a limp, and this weekend pulling a kid around on a sled I postholed about up to my knee. More sore again, and t ender to the touch. Hopefully I can get it better enough to carry bear bait in by mid april. I've got my dad's 375 that needs a bear pelt to show it off properly.

I limp in the morning. Spinning on my bike helps a lot, as does, I think, long walks in the cattails after ditch chickens. But it is still very swollen.

Good luck with yours. I'm trying to get back to running VERY slowly.

Lots of Achilles problems. I better knock on wood, but I have never injured an Achilles tendon at all. I don't think I even know how one injures the Achilles.

September 18 we had friends in from England. She LOVES to bowl and he LOVES to fish.....Bass Pro with bowling for the win! Except, in the second frame I let loose the ball and POP went a ligament. It was pretty bad and I am just back to about 80%. I swear the first thought was "Did I just blow my hunting season freaking BOWLING?" It hurt pretty badly all season but I was able to get a pronghorn and make all my hunts. You just never know.....

Speaking of Achilles injures, a guy I know was grocery shopping with his wife and pushing the cart behind her as she browsed the available selections of various items. As they were traveling down one isle, he turned around to look at an attractive woman who had passed them traveling the other way. As he was looking at the other woman, he ran the shopping cart into his wife's ankle and ruptured her Achilles tendon. They don't make dog houses big enough for that situation.

As for me, the family farm I grew up on had two portable grain augers for unloading trucks into grain bins. One was a six inch diameter auger that could be moved around by hand without a tractor but it definitely took some muscle and elbow grease. The other auger was eight inches in diameter and took a deadlift of (I'm guessing) 400 pounds to get the end off the ground and the weight onto the wheels. One day I got confused as to which auger was which and grabbed ahold of the eight inch behemoth. I wasn't willing to admit my mistake while my dad was watching so I decided to prove my worth and "give er hell". I still feel that lesson in my back 20 years later. Just plain dumb.

A couple of knee ligaments partially tore hazing pledges in a fraternity house many moons ago...

Since then the only thing I've really hurt is my back twice lifting weights. Got lazy with my form on deadlifts resulted in an ouch...

this fall I heard of a story bout a dude trying to jump a crevice slipping on ice and falling off of a cliff trying to recover a mulie buck.... kicker is that the buck was a forkie... maybe he'll chime in :D

Dumbest injury for me was while staking a mulie during Muzzleloader season I wasn't paying attention and stepped into a badger hole. Went down past my knee in the hole. Took me about 10 minutes to get my leg out from the hole as it was completely wedged in. Then I found out I couldn't walk on it. This was 15 minutes into opening morning. Limped back to the truck. Not much hunting got done after that. Found out 2 days later my ankle was broke.

I've always said my body hates my brain. And often times just hates me regardless. Might have something to do with knocking myself out with a baseball bat when hitting it against a tree at age 6..... It's been a rocky slope since. To name a few of the DUMB ones.

Middle school my broke foot while doing a warm up drill at school. Tried to dove hunt that evening and after hobbling to the middle of the field had to sit down take my shoe off and cried from the pain. Only shot one. Winged it and had to chase it in a briar patch while barefoot with broken foot. Mama was not happy when she came home and found out.
Cut the mess out of my toe when walking on a janky homemade boat launch and slipped on a piece of tin. Friend of the family that night stitched me up but frogging after that wasn't the best idea. Nerve damage still occasionally hurts.
Torn rotator cuff chasing chickens at Mardi Gras

And the most recent was last May. While running hog dogs I was riding on the 4wheeler with my buddy who had a pirouge rack built over the top of the bike. I'm sitting behind him leaning my back against the rack not hanging on. He takes off fast down a trail and hits a bump. I went flying straight up and smash my face against the square tubing. Somehow got 4 different cuts out of that with stitches in 3. My buddy's wife got to start off her mother's day that night by taking me to the ER. The look on the doc and nurse's face when she was explain and mentioned her husband which wasn't me was hilarious. And Mama was sure proud when I called her for mother's day that morning and told her what happened.
Good times.

I go into PTSD if I think about all my stupid accidents. Let's just say I haven't touched a power tool in decades and leave it at that. Presently, though, I've got this nagging rotator cuff problem that makes me grouchy. It hurts just to sleep. Trying to do PT to avoid surgery.
