RUT JUNKEY , Great catches ! I never carry my setter if I am a ways from the truck . What I do is swing the springs out , find a beaver chewed stump that is high enough and the right width to place one of the round spring ends through the point of the stump. Then push down on the top side of the spring until the spring is compressed enough to flip the safety latch into place . Once you have one side latched , repeat with the other spring . Pull the beaver out as soon as enough tension is released from the jaws .
After I'm done skinning the small beavers I fillet off some backstrap and thigh meat . Good stuff.
Don't know what the otter situation is around there , but they have a way of eventually finding their way into 330's if they are present in the area. John
