Camping trip incident

It’s the damn side-by-side and wake boat crowd. Had some side-by-side idiot doing donuts at a boat launch yesterday. I was waiting for gravel to hit my truck but luckily it never did.
Those things always seem to come with amplified music and copious amounts of mid day booze. Like they’re sitting around brainstorming how they can make their presence even more obnoxious.

The vault toilet at that site had the remnants of an 18 or 24 pack of Coors Original in it as well. F’n people.

Questions:
1. Did I overreact? No, trust your gut.
2. Should I go get a handgun (I don't have any)? Yes.
3. Would it have helped or hurt in the situation? Take a CCW course and you’ll know.
4. How big of a deal is it that the Sheriff never came? Probably the new norm.
Pretty much sums it up I carry with my kids because flight may be a issue trying to leave in a hurry with boys that young but it would always be the first choice before fight

Back in the day I'd check out once I saw vomit covered pillows, sleeping bags or clothes piled outside the honey bucket facilities.

1. No, keep your loved ones safe, don't escalate with a likely drunk and armed idiot
2. Yes, I always carry one when in places I am likely to run into some idiot who has one and could possibly do me harm. That means when fishing, camping, and when in parts of the city where crime is higher
3. Hurt, don't use a gun as an excuse to escalate. But I'd certainly use it if he's shooting AT your group with the intent to harm. A CCW class will help define that situation for you, taking a life is no joke even in self defense.
4. The Sheriff likely has bigger fish to fry in that moment, but next time if it's safe to do without starting a scene with the idiot-get the guy's boat registration #, take a video, and call it in as soon as you can

It always leaves a stone in your gut, but you did the right thing. Except I would follow him home from the boat ramp and put a marmot in his truck.

IMHO - Bringing a handgun to a gunfight leaves you under-gunned. You having a handgun isn't going slow this guy down one bit. If he sees you looking down the top of a rifle when you tell him to GTFO, he might start thinking. He might be so jacked its gonna escalate and your family gets hurt.

I guarantee your wife wants you alive more than she wants you to be a cowboy who gets "senselessly killed".

I imagine Washington is not a Stand Your Ground state. You could find yourself in the handcuffs at the end of the day.

I'm not the biggest fan of carrying a handgun but after a life-threatening scenario that happened to me recently, I'm carrying a lot more. I think you did right to get out of there, and didn't overreact.

What’s the old saying “ But I’m a winner “ . You did the right thing by not endangering your family for sure. Things could’ve went south in a hurry. But getting protection and learning to be proficient with it is a must these days. Then if backed into a corner you can protect your family well

Questions:
1. Did I overreact? Nope, sounded like an unsafe situation that I wouldn't have been comfortable with. High chance alcohol was mixing with firearms which I avoid at all costs. Removing yourself from the situation was the right choice imo.
2. Should I go get a handgun (I don't have any)? Totally up to you. I'm not a handgun guy so I'm skewed. Maybe I've been lucky in life, but I've never found myself in a situation where I wished I had one. Probably lucky, but also brown bears don't overly concern me either
3. Would it have helped or hurt in the situation?hurt, like others have said, another gun really risks escalating.
4. How big of a deal is it that the Sheriff never came? Probably the usual in the back country

As if we needed more proof that Americans are getting dumber by the day. Makes me sad to see the direction this country is going.

As I was told to me last summer after a guy in a boat threatened to kill me and my dad while we were fishing (drunken boast, he was too fat to kill anything except a bucket of chicken in five minutes), always get the number off the boat if you can. Law enforcement doesn't take kindly to this kind of behavior and they will follow up on it if you can give them identifying information.

Personally on a trip like that I won’t leave the house without my handgun. It wouldn’t have mattered in this situation other than piece of mind I guess because by the time someone knows I have a handgun they will need a body bag. If you get one it will due zero good to just pull it out because you have one. even having one just leaving would have been the proper course if that’s the way you felt
Yep. My job is to protect my family. Say said dude wants to get handsy with my wife, and I can’t protect her… I’ve failed her and my family. Good guys with guns are what stops bad guys with guns.

Still, deescalating and leaving was the right call.. but I’ll never be without person protection, especially when loved ones are counting on me to be their protector.

Also, training matters. You can’t just have a hand gun and not practice drawing, etc. Practice, but pray you’ll never have to utilize that practice.

You did the right thing in my book. I carry a gun because cops are too heavy. Even if you had a gun I still think you leave and come back when the coast is clear. My gun is for people approaching to do harm. If I can leave and no one else is in danger from the threat I’m leaving.

That guy was an a$$hat. Crap like that is why I don't go camping nearly as much as I used to. Glad you and your family are safe. I'd say you handled the situation well.
