Bison Incident in Yellowstone

This has been rolling around in the back of my head since yesterday. And while I'm no bison ecologist specifically, I've done more close-up field work than most others with wild bison throughout the year with the Smithsonian, Inter-tribal Grassland Network, and a couple of MT tribes.

As far as I'm concerned, this guy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Generally speaking bison are reasonably tolerant of just about every non-canid/ursid kind of animal getting pretty close, but when July rolls around everything kind of goes up in the air. I've been able to push herds of 50+ just by stamping a T-post against the ground, and I've been chased off by rogue bulls who covered 150 yards or more to get to me. They can be tough to predict this time of year (though I just assume the worst for those wandering noise-making bulls).

This guy was flat out unlucky, in my view. A bit unwise possibly, but not doing anything especially wrong that I could notice from the video. Glad to see he's doing at least ok-ish.

I’m talking about everyone who thinks they know what happened and how close is too close . And what is safe . From a shakey video .

Last week a girl was eaten by an alligator, she was swimming in a swamp .
They swim in rip currents and drown .
Hell last month a guy rented jets skis and tried to take them out on the ocean in small craft warnings .
It’s everyday down here , tourist getting hurt doing stupid stuff . It’s almost a industry.

Are you a tribal biologist?

No but I work with them on different projects throughout the seasons. Favorite thing to do is go look for pronghorn fawns in the spring - if you like to sit and glass and look for animals for hours on end, it's the bee's knees.

Sounds great. I have a cousin who just retired after many years as a tribal biologist out around Polson. Lots of great stories
