Be Careful Out There!

Somewhat related (no body shaming intended)
Talk about two wildly different experiences and individuals. The self-jousted hiker is an ER nurse, so his training likely kept him alive; he is obviously pretty even keeled to look down at a trekking pole impaled in his body and say "merely a flesh wound" and hike the F out. Hats off.

The other example, and I will get in trouble for this, was self-induced. When you are that size, you are not in good shape, especially not enough to head out on a hot day on a hike with elevation, terrain challenges, etc. And to basically fall apart at two miles? Really? That seems like someone who has no idea of their personal limits. If you get winded going up one flight of stairs, don't tackle hikes like that. Look at the resources siphoned off for that "rescue".

Rant over. Keep those baskets on your trekking poles, and stay in shape.

I've never understood not pushing a button for fear of costs.

SAR extraction is free in basically every state as far as I am aware. Charges only begin once you get put in ambulances, air or ground. Air extraction is rarely an ambulance, usually National Guard or law enforcement, so... free. You usually get put in an ambulance after extraction, if needed. And if it's needed, then who cares about the cost.

Generally speaking, if something happens, push the button.

Yes! And if you are lucky as I was ... Two Bear Air out of the Flathead may extract your broken body at no cost to you. :)

Mine have heavy rubber cane style tips so kind of surprised by this possibility.
Mine had rubber tips too but after hiking in scree it wore the rubber off and then sharpened it to a nice point.
TSA in NZ was going to take it from me but then gave me a pass . He said “I’ll let you slide but I can’t guarantee the next guy will”

Mine did too and just bought replacement cane rubber tips that have bigger base from Wally World. Holding up great.

There was an it guy from denver a few years ago who hiked into a wilderness area and managed to fall on an arrow hard enough to shove it through his thigh. Search and rescue was not able to land their helicopter on the slope to get him out so it was a pretty big deal.

Busted…; )
He does not know Murphy it appears.
I never read the large Lois story, but I'll bet she was on the Taft point trail. 7500' and through trees and then glacier polished granite.
Or who swam out on a rock in the Merced above Vernal falls..........

Too many stories from no one will believe this, in my 20 years as a Ranger/EMT, adding 12 that was Lake Patrol.
"Impaled on fishing rod in boat" ,"Boat drove over another boat at high speed".....I have a hundred stoties.

Be safe out there

Happened to a guy that came out with us. Country was so thick they had to call in a second helicopter with a basket.

I would venture that most people do not understand their own medical plan via their insurance.

HSA, FSA, or PPO.

  • Could most people explain the difference?
  • Are you on the right plan for your needs?
  • Most people do not understand which plan they are on.

In Network vs Out of Network coverage

  • Could most people explain the difference?
  • Do most people know how to find out the difference?
  • Most people do not understand what the difference is between in network and out of network

Free Stuff (Eye Glasses, Preventative Screening, Teeth Cleanings, Virtual Nurse/Teladoc, Wellness, etc)

  • A lot of vision plans have a discount or up to a certain amount for glasses each year. Even if you do not wear glasses, you can get an expensive set up sunglasses every year for next to nothing.
  • An annual physical is free through most insurances
  • Dental cleanings can be free all the time or once every 6 months
  • Rather than using WebMD to self diagnose, you can chat with your insurance provided medical professional for free or a small fee rather than going to the doctor.
  • There are a slough of free mental and self help through most insurance companies.
  • Most people do not understand there are things included in your plan

Deductible, Co-Pay, and Max out of pocket
  • How much is your deductible? Did you go with a high deductible plan?
  • How much does insurance pay after your deductible?
  • Does your plan pretty much just have a Co-Pay for everything?
  • Health care is essentially no cost after you hit your In Network or Out of Network max out of pocket
  • Most people do not know how much the insurance will pay on Medical claims.

Dental, Medical, Pharmacy, and Vision are together or seperate.

  • Most people assume that these are all medical, but in most cases they are separate.

Just like most people don't know that SAR is basically free.

In addition, people that do not have insurance probably do not understand that their are government programs for exactly that situation.

There is even options for people who make zero income.

There is a lot of things that if people did a little amount of research they could understand, but wanting too is another story.
