Talk about two wildly different experiences and individuals. The self-jousted hiker is an ER nurse, so his training likely kept him alive; he is obviously pretty even keeled to look down at a trekking pole impaled in his body and say "merely a flesh wound" and hike the F out. Hats off.
The other example, and I will get in trouble for this, was self-induced. When you are that size, you are not in good shape, especially not enough to head out on a hot day on a hike with elevation, terrain challenges, etc. And to basically fall apart at two miles? Really? That seems like someone who has no idea of their personal limits. If you get winded going up one flight of stairs, don't tackle hikes like that. Look at the resources siphoned off for that "rescue".
Rant over. Keep those baskets on your trekking poles, and stay in shape.
