Interesting...good post. IMO, not many sounds promote such a rush of wondrous admiration and optimism. Ain't no ride like the path it tugs your senses toward.
 
He says the next step is to figure out what the sounds mean. I got news for him; it has already been done. Elknut has already done this.
 
It's been decades since I read Elk of North America but if I recollect correct, the high pitch carries farther in open country and the lower pitch carries farther in heavily wooded areas. Elk are more open country, Red Deer are more old growth forest. These are general evolutionary principles and mileage may vary by individual and time on location.
 
All I know is that it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time.
