Are raffles real?

Got another, "We regret to inform you that you did not win, thank you for your contribution." emails today.

I've got decades worth. Never a congratulations letter.

I look at it as giving an organization something and having a SLIGHT chance at getting something for it. But honestly, I am the unluckiest raffle (and banquet attendee) in the history of conservation.

Just pissy enough to start thinking there is someone somewhere laughing over the fact that there is no prize at all.

Prove me wrong - If you have won a big ticket item via raffle, tell us about it. Just make sure your 1099's are in order.

I have the same luck.

I’ve won a Yeti cooler in a Wild Sheep Foundation raffle and a 95mm Swarovski BTX from the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society. 12ga Citori from a Pheasants Forever banquet years ago. I don’t go into any raffle thinking I’m going to win, just a great way to support the cause.

This is the first year I have participated in any hunting raffle. I supposedly had a 1 in 300 chance of winning. After not winning I played with this random number generator for awhile and remembered why I don't bet money down at the racetrack either. At least hunting raffles are for a good cause.

I’m a sucker for raffles. “Somebody has to win it.” It’s never been me. Don’t know why I do it anymore.

I did well at some BHA rendezvous’s until they got big. Shotgun, some costa sunglasses a knife and hatchet set. Other than that though I can’t think of anything I’ve really won and I seem to enter quite a few

Don't despair. I never won anything either. Then in one DU dinner, won a .22 Magnum, some Ruger 77 which I gave back to be redrawn, a DU pellet gun, couple of knives, and, feeling guilty (I was on the DU Committee) bought a 20/28 set Beretta OU. Gold inlay and everything. And a couple of paintings. Oops, guess I forgot basic math skills, looks like they came out ahead. They were really good at refilling wine glasses though. All for the wetlands anyway.

Then, after years of buying, in a $25 raffle for the girl's softball team, I won a Winchester 12 gauge semi-auto (their top of the line) and a Benelli pump. Gave those to duck-hunting kids I knew who were hunting with POS shotguns. And now they support DU. For $25 I got to seed the next crop.

As the outlaws said, "Keep that masked man shooting, those bullets are real silver."

Ok - There was that one time.

I upped my RMEF membership to life at the local banquet right before COVID. I got a 1 in 9 chance at new production engraved Winchester 1886 in 45/70. Won. I was excited as hell until I saw that the WRAC lawyers made them put a tang safety on it. Right where I would have mounted the tang sight.

I sold it on GB for enough to cover my evening and Life Membership.

Its a weird world where an Uberti 1886 sells for more than a "real" Winchester.

I've never won a thing. But I do know there are a few guys here that have hit it pretty big on raffles/draws over the years, hopefully they chime in.

Local banquet here? I can’t believe you were able to win something over the organizers, local chapter chairs, etc. I was one and done at that banquet

I’m thinking back to a DW banquet. I actually won a blind bag. Pretty handy thing too. Last time I knew it’s location was in chest deep water in late October in a northern MN pond. I think I was grabbing shotgun cases that were floating by me and grabbing the boat that just sank out from under me when I tripped over it. Lost that bag, with 4 boxes of steel shot, a knife, a nalgene, and four king size snicker bars. Don’t think I came out ahead on that one.

I’ve lost at all kinds of things; raffles, draws, sweepstakes, golf, blackjack, roulette, horse races, arguments with the wife. If everyone was a winner they wouldn’t raise any money and Vegas wouldn’t have billion dollar casinos. Embrace the suck, maybe next time will be your (or maybe even my) lucky day. Or we could continue to suck. No telling. 🤷‍♂️
