Explain to me again how this happens???|oo

THOMPSON PASS, ID -- A man hunting elk near Thompson Pass Road was accidentally shot and killed by a member of his own hunting party.

The call came into the Shoshone County Sheriff's department around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

57-year-old James Hinchliff was hunting with two friends a few miles off Thompson Pass highway when he was shot.

The Shoshone County Sheriff's Department reports that a friend thought Hinchliff was an animal. Investigators say a man slipped and fell, then saw a flash of brown he thought might be antlers and fired his gun.

Hincliff was shot once near his rib cage. Authorities say the man who shot Hinchliff was an experienced hunter, adding the pair hunted together for more than 20years.

Hincliff was not wearing any hunter safety clothing such and was instead dressed from head to toe in camouflage, making it extremely difficult for his friend to see him.

In Idaho hunters aren't required to wear hunter orange as they are in many other states, including Washington, when hunting game.

Since 1992, there have been five hunting related deaths in Shoshone County and in each case the victim was not wearing hunter orange.

"I think it's critically important that people get on board with hunter orange and wear it religiously in the hunting season because it really saves lives," Rod Plank with the Shoshone County Sheriff's Department said.

I can't fantom going into the woods without my Hunter's Orange. It became a law when I was around 14 in Louisiana, we did'nt like it, but I see so many "Stupid" accidents like this. John

Easy, idiots not identifying a target. It is sad, but happens all too often here in WI even with blaze orange as a 60% coverage rule

That's exactly right, schmalts. What you wear has never been a valid excuse or safeguard. It comes down to retards with a quick trigger finger thinking they are going to get lucky shooting something rustling in the brush. The ethical hunters wait until we have identified a target we have a tag for, then we pull the trigger. Sigh.

Who in the world shoots at a flash of a target? (That's a rhetorical question) What a friggin idiot. Something that I'm sure will be hard to live with. Too bad.

In Idaho, we don't like the government telling us what is good for us, what is healthy. It is our God-given right to not where Orange while Driving without our Seatbelts while drinking Keystone Light and using the side-view mirror as a gun rest to shoot from inside the cab of the PU.

Sometimes we even run with scissors....

At least he only shot him once. Guess you can rule adultery out of the equation:rolleyes:

This last September, I had some of Wyomings finest, drive across the sage, coming straight west of me, jump off one of those stupid 2 seater ATVs and point both their guns at the herd of antelope I was sitting 70 yards from.

Needless to say they were in a direct line of fire from me. Luckily ,the antelope were not stupid and started running pretty quick, to the North. I was also running to the South as well. I had a orange hat on, but I know they never saw me before I got up or while I was running. They were at the most, 300 yards from the antelope at first.

Hell, they never saw me as I was waving my one finger hello, yelling at them, as they got back in thier atv and went North after the herd.

I dam near put some coal mines in the drawers that day.

It sucks that this kind of thing happens. Isn't that one of the first things we learned in hunter safety? Always identify your target.

I think it's GAY to have to wear orange. We should have the right not to wear it. Alot of people think they can't get close to an animal with it on which isn't the case, and thats not why I don't like it. I don't wear my seatbelt and don't like wearing orange because I have to. I don't drink Keystone but shooting from the rearview mirror sounds like fun :D :D

...hitting the namesake tonite? ;)

I'm trying to picture how this is even possible :)...unless you have one of those installed on the dash rear view mirrors and you are hunting from a rig with no winshield. But I did learn in september in wyoming how easy it can be to roll down the window, place your rifle on the driver side mirror and proceed to shoot an antelope no more than 50 yards from a road. I don't know if there is a law against doing this on a dirt road, but i know it is not my style...to each his own I guess.

This story is really pretty sad. I wear hunter orange here in Idaho during the rifle season for the same reason I wear my seatbelt...I don't trust everyone.

Dibs on Moosie's Keystones.

We had a guy near here slip and fall on a stake that impailed him and killed him this year. Another died from carbon monozide poisoning from using a lattern in a trailer. Pretty sad accidents. I remember the year I took hunter education they told us the most common hunting accident that year was one guy shooting another when they got out of opposite sides of a pickup and were each pulling their gun out while it was pointed at the other.

We should learn from these accidents and spread the word on what to be careful about.

What I don't understand is that the article says that the shooter is an "experienced hunter"! WTF? How experienced can you be to shoot something that doesn't look anything near your intended target?

Very sad.
