With application deadline looming I have been scratching my head. I have some points to deal with here in CO, but not a ton....11 in elk, 5 deer and 6 or 7 in pronghorn.....and with the change looming I would LIKE to use some. The other day my SF Association local sent out an email that my former 1SG (he retired as a CSM), who has a hookup with an outfitter down south, had gotten a couple of cow hunts donated and they put out the call. I threw my name in the hat for shits and giggles. Last night I found out I get picked for that. To make the deal even better one of my buddies who ran our motorcycle mentor program (also retired SGM) got picked too. I thought I would go ahead and kick this pig!!! As of now I will be doing that at the end of August (private land tag) and rolling to see Redman in November. I will also be making a run to our cabin in May after attending the HP's college graduation in Nashville. I have some work to do on it, have a garden tractor to buy and will also run by Flora to do a little trimming and cutting on the farm. I am staying open to all possibilities as well. As things are shaping, either this year or next will probably be my last as a CO resident....so there is THAT to think about too. Here is to hoping we get SOME kind of rain this summer.......

11 elk points as a resident… you have some nice options. Burn ‘em!!!

Well, the trip home went well but worked my old, half-crippled body more than I anticipated....got lots done though. Tractor all set up, used a couple times and first service done, household projects done, etc. Colorado draw was a big zeeerrrooo for me, and one of those I theoretically should have drawn. Redman came up with an auxiliary plan and we are going to see about a WY goat hunt. It would be in roughly the same area we were in last year and would be a fun trip. We shall see.

I did talk to Kevin last week and if all for both of us stays good I will be up in Wisco for rifle season again this year as well. I cannot tell you how much I want fall to come. Also, in a bit of news, after my cow hunt in August I will be headed back to Indiana to officially change my self back to an "official" Hoosier and begin the process of washing my hands of Colorado. I have had some great times here but the downward spiral in this state along with the advantages of home make this a no brainer. I can visit mountains anytime I want.....Hoosierland is a whole other ball game.

Well, change 1. Hunt got moved up a few days to accommodate ranch activities. Luckily I am naturally off this weekend....soooooo.....I will be wheels up tomorrow headed to TFO Trinidad to go chase some of the best meat around :) I am glad I keep my stuff pretty much ready to go at all times so not much to do other than load the truck in the morning.

Hello from scenic Trindad CO!!! Got here about 12. Went to Big R for the tag and then down the street for some Chinese :) I'm a sucker for Sesame chicken. About a 30 min drive out to the ranch, down load gear and then off to confirm zero (ranch rule). 1 shot on steel at 100, 1 at 300 and off we went for the afternoon.

Drove a couple of miles from where the range was, parked and went up to a high point to glass a river bed. Found a small herd (+-20) of views, calves and a rag horn. They were milling around in head high grass and some salt cedars. After 20 minutes or so they bedded down. We could just make out heads occasionally. We sat and waited. Took about 2 hours for them to get up and start back to the creek to drink. Once a good bit of them came out we took several minutes to pick out a dry cow. Sorted out one that walked out on a gravel bar and waited a few more minutes for her to turn broadside. Johnny and Robbie (the guides) gave me 425 and 437 as ranges. I dialed 437 on the Veracity PH and PRCsilla got her first animal on her first shot. She made it about 10 yds up the bank. We could get the truck within about 200m so the pack out WAS MUCH easier than I'm used to 😉. Meat is in the cooler and the GENEROUS donor of this opportunity is springing to tan the for me as well .....I am a lucky man in general, this is icing on the 🎂.

Man I was eyeballing those scopes hard last year, I think I’m on to the Steiner’s H6 line though. How do you like it? A fat cow in August is hard to beat!
This was my first time using it outside of getting it zeroed on this rifle. Worked very well. It is pretty easy to set up with the app and accurate (especially given this is my max distance on animals to begin with). i think it is good value. I still like my Swaros better (this ended up on this rifle as I was waiting on a Z5i+), but this is also half the price. Those Steiners are assembled in Greely at the Burris plant :)
