Proof is advertising a new barrel that goes up to 80k psi. I think my 6.5 prc is going to be in need of a new barrel soon anyways I’m more excited about that than a new metal case. Supposedly the barrels will last longer also

I ran my Creedmoor with RL 26 and a 140 very close to these numbers. N555 will do it as well. A new case that is thinner would allow for maybe a grain or so more powder. But no matter what there is a limit to case capacity. This ammo is all smoke in advertising, hand loaders have been doing for a while.

Proof claimed 5k rounds of 7BC with no loss of accuracy in their new barrel. Guy at gun counter said H&K and another manufacturer are also experimenting with different alloys or coatings for barrels.

I have same question about action. The case is supposed to handle the pressure but if you compare the 280AI to the 7BC in the same exact Weatherby Backcountry 2.0 they are using the 9 lug magnum action for the 7BC and the 6 lug standard action for the 280AI. Even with the 7BC having a 4” shorter barrel it’s listed at 4.8ounces heavier (5.7lbs) than the 280AI with a 4” longer barrel (5.4lbs).

I realize Weatherby actions are a bit unique, but their engineers must not have trusted the 6 lug action. IIRC all firearms imported into Europe must be proofed to 25-30% above max psi so I think with the alloy case taking the brunt of the pressure most actions will be fine.

I think they had plans to play with the NAS3 case. I need to call Steve as we haven't talked in awhile. Sucks to play with bullets and guns all day for a living. mtmuley

Case-wise yes, that should be doable.

Without having any inside info, I suspect it’s an action issue. A standard bolt face action (30-06, 308, Creed) is less stressed than a magnum bolt face action, all else being equal. So, the standard bolt face actions have some spare strength so you can turn up the pressure on them without the same level of risk as you’d have with a magnum bolt face. Probably why the 7 Backcountry is what it is, and not a shorter fatter case.

I read an old post by Kirby Allen on another forum where he was saying the same thing about case head size vs stress. He said you could run a 223 way up there.

Maybe, maybe not. Factory loads are generally loaded for an average of what will hopefully shoot the best in a wide array of rifles, not max velocities with a given projectile.

I don’t think you’re loading to 80k psi? Presuming Federal is not maxing these loads out I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s room to run for hand loaders with these cases. I think they are going to be selling cases and components which should all but guarantee this is going to stick around.

All things equal, if the new case give an extra grain, take it. I would suspect that with my testing with both of the powders that get it to 3k, that grain won’t make a difference. It will just be a bigger fireball out the end of the barrel. Maybe the 150 grain plus will see a slight gain because these are slow powders. But I think this is just marketing at its finest.

Their secret with barrel life is the extreme progressive twist. Goes from basically straight rifling to traditional rifling by the end of the barrel.

It will also obviously get a relatively big jump in velocity. Lots of chronos have already verifed that - so it sure isnt marketing.

I am probably not a consumer - but i think its a great option on the market if someone wants the velocity without a magnum.

They won’t work well in the chopped barrels. You would have to step up in powder speed to Varget or something. A lot more of that than a grain or two is needed to hit these advertised speeds.

Ultimately, when you start messing around in those parameters, you are just increasing the fireball at a certain amount of faster powders.

Chronograph will show it best with a stalled erratic velocity. I see it especially when I’m using ball powders. Add 1 full grain and the nothing really changes on the chrono.

Sure only makes more sense when you can get close to 6.5 prc velocity from an 18 inch barreled 6.5 creedmoor.

The great thing about the modern age of cheaper chronographs is we dont have to believe fudd science on what velocities will be.

Do you mean actually shooting and calculating without a chrono was "fudd"? I agree the new tech is nice. But it also leads to some shooters not knowing crap about ballistics. mtmuley

I killed a mule deer and a bull with them. Didn't have my loading stuff and was living in Nevada. Bought NR tags and came home. The ammo worked well. mtmuley
