280 AI vs. 7 PRC

I have no idea what stock rifles are chambered in 280ai or what your budget is. I do know @p_ham just opened his books back up for new work. He is a FFL dealer and can get you a new 280 and cut the AI.

I would have to imagine that the major manufacturers all have a 280.

Every Browning I've played with has shot extremely well. I'm an AI fan. I did as above a long time ago. Took a 700 mountain rifle in 280 Rem and had a local smith true up the action, set the barrel back a tickle, and recut the chamber to AI. I also like hammer bullets, but I have not moved this one over to them yet. I have too many Barnes on hand to just switch over. 145 LRX at 3050 out of a 22" barrel. Have fun!

280AI, Impact NBK action, H&S Precision stock, 22" Bartlein barrel, Trigger Tech trigger and Vortex optics. Shoots little groups with 160gr and 145gr bullets, N560 or Reloader 26, right at 3000fps. Swap barrels and Bolts and I can configure it to 300WSM or 338 Edge, 257 Roberts AI or 6.5x284.

I'm at 2,990 with 195's in a 24" OAL barreled 7PRC.

What’s ur rifle & load? That sounds like an awesome setup.

I’m listening as well, running 195’s @ 2890 in a 26” not pushing it but thinking it would be a stretch. ADG/LAPUA with N568/570 maybe?

Fwiw as much as I wanted to hate the 7prc I’ve found it a very easy to load for cartridge. Lots of
components and factory options for those that don’t do customs or reload. I do still favor the 7 rm personally. Hornady brass primer pockets suck though in 7 prc 2-3 firing max.

I tried to get H1000 and 180 Hybrids to shoot initially but gave up and went to the N570 and 195's as I have history with that combo in my 7 STW; it's magic if you can get the bullet boattail to the neck radius.

24" oal Benchmark carbon 1-8, DD Enticer Lti
Gunwerks V2 bipod, cheap heavy rear bag
Lands; 2.680 CBTO with Hornady gage and decent pressure
Lands; 2.677 CBTO smoking the bullet and no contact
loading .020" off @ 2.660 CBTO with ADG 1x fired brass
SAC fancy sizing/shoulder/neck die, .308 bushing and .003 shoulder bump
.280 polished expander ball used as a mandrel, secondary op
(my ADG neck wall thickness varies almost .002 so I had to use the mandrel to get consistent neck tension)

this was my process for the N570/195's, and every round I fired

7 gr spread checking pressure and vertical; pressure at 72

1/2gr spread looking at poi consistency

70 and 70.5 grain overlayed (MS Paint on the PC)
70 and 70-5 overlay (Small).jpg

Loaded 70.2 then went to 600 to check velocity
app said hold left, finally did on the 3rd shot

went to 1,000 to dbl check the app velocity and verify it would group at distance
took 1 click off after the 1st hit, then shot the rest

How do you like the N570 for temp stability?

How do you like the N570 for temp stability?

I'm just starting with this PRC but I didn't see anything with the STW.

The real issue is it eats throats. I could measure the lands moving in the STW at 10 shots, 81.3 gr, and used a chamber chiller after every shot. Hoping 70gr is easier on it and I may pull the barrel and put the STW back on for my spring/summer range time just to prolong the inevitable.

I reloaded the 143 HH with RL23 right at 3000 fps. Got over 3100 fps before pressure, but wasn't as accurate. In 4 years, killed 13 animals with them before switching things up.
This is my go-to load. Last time out I got an average of 3292 on a 15 shot session with a SD of 14 out of 24 in barrel. Accuracy with Hammers has been very good, IMO. My range goes to 550 yards. I don't shoot paper there, but accuracy is minute of paper plate or on a good day clay pigeon.

That’s why I stuck with H1000 in my prc. 28 Nosler N570 is like 500 rd barrel life. Don’t ask how I know. :)

I'm at 3265 but with 143s and RL26 in my 280ai.
