I spoke too soon. . .I got to the store last night to find the ammo vault had 4 shopping carts of ammo. . .one was completely full (17 cases) of .22 Federal Target Grade 325 packs.

My bro in AZ has a neighbor that has been hoarding .22 ammo since 2008 and still buys more EVERY time he sees it on the shelf.I starting to see some guess the hoarders got thier feel finally and now they have lots of shooting to burn some ammo. LOL It got so bad I just bought a darn adult air rifle no issue finding rounds for it
I'm talking thousands and thousands of rounds. He loads other calibers too.
He's one of those lunatics that says the **** is going to hit the fan any day now.

When I worked at Bob Wards, in 2009 I had a customer come in and tell me "God sent me from TN to this store in Montana to buy 400,000 rounds of .22lr because 'The South Will Rise Again'"
We didn't have any .22lr in store... I got a good laugh out of it...

Why on earth did some people decide to hoard ammo?
It had a knock on effect in the UK and we were and still are short of many types of ammo/reloading components.

I can only think of really two reasons people hoard ammo and components... Others might have more reasons... But I think they can be lumped into these two.
1. Paranoia, they think the world is going to end; and want to make sure that if it does they don't run out of ammo. Alternately, lots of people seriously distrust the government and think that the gov't wants to take all our guns and ammo, and they don't want to run out when that happens...
2. Some people "hoard" ammo to shoot it. I have a good friend in Bozeman that shoots between shotgun, handgun, rifle, and rimfire they shoot 10-15K rounds a year. They kinda have to store up ammo and components to feed the habit...

I think when something is no longer available, people want it since they can't have it. I'll admit, I've never had much of a .22 stash but have been buying it if I see some. I'm not going to accumulate 20,000 rounds but it's nice to have a good supply. Also, I plan on practicing my shooting a lot more this year and figure I'll be going through a lot more ammo.
There's always that as well.

I havent seen any in Southern MN in a while. Although armslist still has plenty available loacally at high prices. 222 round packs of Winchester for $19. 500 round bricks for $50. $4 for 40 round american eagle. I don't shoot my 22s a whole lot, but I have plenty of 22 LR and 22 Mag. I haven't bought any in a couple of years. No need to I guess. The last time I bought 22 ammo I paid $6.50 for CCI Mini mags and 9.99 for 500 round box of Remignton. Paid between $8-11 for my 22 mag. But when I am out on the range, I like to spend more time behind my 308's, 40 SW, and 44 Mag.
I would not call it paranoia. If you think politicians have not introduced legislation ideas that would limit or add a large tax per round of ammo, you have not been paying attention. One idea I recall is a 5 cent per round tax. On a box of 30-06 it doesn't sound so bad. Now take a brick of .22 and what will it do? It could happen, it is not a ban but a tax. Hell, no one ever thought you would HAVE to have health insurance or be taxed a penalty if you did not have it. Another one is some ID on a bullet. The ID is just a cover of a way to raise ammo prices. Never say never on the foolish ideas that can come out of Washington.

Look at Capital Sports in Helena Montana . Lots of 22 shells as of yesterday.
talked to guy that has over 10,000 rounds stored away ...what the hell man . Thats alot of dead gophers ...and they dont even taste that good ...lol ....just my opinion .
I think i would save something just a little bigger.

Good for you. I guess I could say the same. I stocked up when I heard a proposal of ammo tax per round. Didn't care if it would not become anything, just did it in case it did and because it was cheap to do with .22LR at the time. I also stocked up when the frenzy just started and saw that .22 was the last thing sitting on the shelves and I knew that shooters were forgetting about what ammo they would turn to so they could keep shooting when all the other stuff was gone and high priced. I bought 10 bricks and picked up a few more here and there as I used it. still have 5 left but I think supply is catching up. The stuff is good for decades if stored correctly and I put it in foodsaver bags and pull the air out but not a full vacuum. I do that for .223, 7.62X39, 5.7X28 and .308 that I have bought in bulk.
Ammo is better than money in the bank.
Sheesh what?? Do you think what I said was made up BS? Do a web search, it has been proposed so it is ignorant to say that "nobody wants to take your ammo away" or make it very expensive. Do I think it will happen? probably not but because I was not willing to gamble on it I have plenty of .ammo for me and the kid to plink all we want.
I'll bet this is the same thinking that happens every time a democrat gets elected president.
