Wyoming Poachers

This is a good story. It's about a week old but wondering what your thoughts are on the conviction. Seems to me that their sentencing was a little weak. Maybe they settled, but they should lose there hunting privileges for LIFE and pay a minimum of $25k plus spend 3-6 months in jail. Sad to see these bucks taken... Or wasted!

I think poaching by the oil field workers is a problem...and theres been multiple cases to prove it.

I know exactly where they are talking about, so it kind of hits home for me. Personally the sentence is enough of a deterrent to keep me from wanting to poach a buck. (in addition to my conservation ethics).

Personally, I think that punishment is the last thing in the poacher's mind when they pull the trigger. I think that poachers live in a culture that rewards lawbreaking and conniving behavior. The key is to create a culture where that is not the norm. We have been successful in creating that culture amongst sportsmen where it is encouraged to report the crimes. It will be a continuing battle to make that conservation ethic permeate ummmm "disenfranchised communities".

The Game and Fish press release, after the jump, reads like a horror story of gas field culture. There’s no telling what acts of depravity humans may commit when amped up on Monster energy drink.

Not shocked. But hey, in their defense they probably couldn't get the whole deer in to their "jacked up" smoke-stacked diesel (you know the with the sweet black rockstar wheels and the sticker on the back window that reads "oilfield trash"). So taking the antlers was the only solution.

When I read articles like this - and poachers 'lose' their hunting privileges for a term - I'm always curious whether they held a license at all in the first place. I'm sure there are more instances of transient workers poaching game - not the only ones doing it certainly - but I don't fully appreciate the slant of the story. Glad these 2 bozos got nailed, though.

Seems like a stiff sentence to me for a working class guy. Big fine, jail time (and the income lost from it), lost gun, and loss of hunting privileges...
