Wyoming Girl, 12, Stuns With One-Shot Kill From 600 Yards To Bag Huge Elk

I don't care how far the shots are, but it seems like the distance is more important than hunting to some. I guess that's ok, but I don't see very many stories about "I missed at x number of yards".

I'm sure some are impressed while others would be more impressed about how short the shot was.

I missed this one twice off hand at under 100 yards - was totally rattled. Not sure why he just stood there and didn’t run. It was his time? Third and last round in the precision rifle was good. As far as the hunt, it was a ton of days. I’ve shot 8 bull elk in the last 12 years and the average distance is under 100 yards. 4 archery elk and 4 rifle elk.

If you’re gonna take a long shot, have the right conditions and equipment, practice, brains, etc - it’s usually way less risky than an adrenaline charged up close surprise encounter. My opinion.

Absolutely.

Every rodeo/brass pile I’ve had was under 300 yards. And they were all scenarios where things unfolded rapidly and/or unexpectedly. How I handled those and whether I should’ve shot at all on some of them is a different discussion, I guess.

Meanwhile plenty of one shot success past 300 yards. Every time I had been looking through the scope for probably a minute or more before pulling the trigger.

Funny how some pick certain topics to snivel about when there are real issues facing hunting and conservation.
Funny...that is what the writer of the article should be doing, but instead he's writing about some kid who shot an elk on her farm at 600 yards...yeah, go figure...maybe send your thoughts to the guy who wrote the article...

From what I’ve seen from my wife and daughter- they are way more calm/careful than me. 🙂
My sister. Sad to me that she doesn't hunt any more. Back in the day she was a calm cool killing machine.
I have to smile remembering her getting pissed at her first husband for trying to mansplain her shots to her. She was by far the better shot.

My daughter is an excellent shot and has missed only a couple times in a decade of hunting. Only one critter (big bull elk) that she has shot at did not get killed due to her missing. This year we hunted antelope and made a mile long stalk to get in range of a particular buck. It took several hours and even though we were half the distance of her previous antelope, we had to get a lot closer due to the wind. We were in the no click zone and trying to find a position to shoot from when the buck jumped up and gave us the stare down. I set up the tripod and moved aside. She clamped the rifle on, and moved the center post up and shot within a matter of about 10 seconds. The buck bolted. We weren’t sure of the shot but assumed he was hit, so she chambered another round and fired at the buck running full speed at close to 300 yards and missed. She chambered another and I said he’s getting out there and you’re going to have to hold just a touch in front of him. She fired again and it was closer to 400 at that time and she dropped him. When we got to the antelope, we saw the first shot was a perfect double lung, third shot hit him in the hip and knocked him over even though he was already dead on his feet. I know @psinclair has seen her shoot a few times when she was real young and she can shoot a whole lot better now.

Maybe you could start your own news source so you can choose what is important to cover.
Maybe you believe “news” like this is more important than conservation and hunting issues. That’s ok as well…does not mean we need to start more news sources. Carry on …

Where did I say it was more important?

I was merely offering you could start your own then you don’t have to worry about what Cowboy State Daily covers.

Carry on.
