A few points:
Day drinking was socially acceptable, if not outright accepted.
Drinking age laws were lower and usually ignored.
Alcoholism was fairly rampant.
A lot of the vets from that era had “hunting accidents”.
I’d rather go to war than deal with some of my exes.
