Wyoming Girl, 12, Stuns With One-Shot Kill From 600 Yards To Bag Huge Elk

All perfectly valid points that aren't all that disputable.
I’d add just because a 12 year old can out shoot you doesn’t mean much. I don’t mean that as an insult I have a buddy that shoots a ridiculous amount with 2 young boys. His 8 year old is constantly ringing steel out to 900 yards. Hard to say how much time that girl spent behind a gun. Glad they enjoyed their season

I would much rather have the kids ranch than her rifle. I am a little bit disappointed that my parents didn't buy me a ranch because if they had I would be out road hunting predators today. Probably drinking beer while doing it.

Probably.
I bet not. You probably wouldn’t even be interested in hunting. Seems like that’s most common for the ones that have it.

I have wondered about that, it might be like shooting deer in the yard, which I have never found enjoyment in, but wow our public land hunting is taking a nosedive. Long range gun or not.

I have a modestly equipped 300 RUM. Last year while elk hunting late in the season, I came upon a bedded 7x7 bull with no way to sneak up on him undetected. I decided to walk right at him and at 602 yards his lazy head poked up and he stared right into me.

You shouldn't use a 300 RUM for hunting. Burns way too much powder, has too long of a barrel and obviously the recoil is brutal. No way you can shoot one accurately. I can point you toward another site where you will learn this and more. mtmuley

A 2 minute scroll through Instagram will turn up a lot more garbage than the Wyoming girls elk hunt
I'm not trying to derail but your right. found this in 30 seconds on fb tonight. 600 yard shots have nothing on guys like these douche bags.

I suppose me taking my daughter on an 8-10 mile walk with 4K of elevation gain in the Gallatin canyon looking for a bull elk with a precision rifle is unfair chase,
Unfair chase? Com'on man, no. Having a precision rifle cannot, in and of itself, be unfair, it's what we do with it.

Real hunting, the kind most of us are actually after, takes both skill and effort. Those aren’t the same thing. I don’t have much skill, but I can still put in the effort (even if I slow down a little more every year). I've drug my daughter on similar hunts/trips. I’m also sure I’d have better skills if I relied less on technology. I know my map and compass skills are less than they used to be because my phone has completely eliminated the need for them. And I also used to spend more time tracking back before I had HD binos and a spotting scope, simply out of necessity. But I also enjoy eating elk/deer, so I make some concessions to improve my odds (and try to hunt states other than WA).

My last hunt didn’t feel much like a hunt at all; more like grocery shopping. No fancy tech, no long-range shot— WY just makes it an easy tag to fill. And it left me wondering if I’d do it again. I didn't get much beyond meat out of it. Maybe that's enough, maybe not.

For me, it always comes back to the question: What am I really after? Am I just trying to kill something, or is it something more—or some mix of both? I think for most of us it’s always a combination, and the ideal mix is different for each person. Still, I think it’s healthy to question ourselves every now and then, even if it results in simply confirming our positions.

I know I got to a point last night where I thought about taking the bow up again. It's been three years since I put it down.

I remember a BOTW episode years ago where a young girl made a shot on an elk approaching 800 yards with a .243 and 95 grain VLD. At the time I thought it was cool. Even loaded some. mtmuley

I will definitely always remember the early episodes of that show. My mind was blown

Am I the only one feeling a bit disgusted by this article? It isn't so much the fact of a 600 yard shot, that is for a different discussion, but by the fact that the article highlights it being 600 yards. Why not just remove the range from the story? Shooting 600 yards takes practice and solid knowledge of the ballistics of your rifle and ammo and I'm not a fan of the article promoting the shot distance as a highlight of the event. She may be able to do it but does this make others now think they can when they shouldn't be?

There is also this from the article:

Why are you only practicing to 500 yards but then in the field taking a 600 yard shot? The ballistics are significantly different between those two ranges and its another MOA into your on target shot variance.
I absolutely agree, a couple years ago Meateater had one of there employees kids on the podcast talking about the elk he shot at a very far range. he even stated that he had never shot that far but why not it was a huge elk.... I could not believe what i was hearing on a podcast. I emailed them about it and of course never heard back. But hell after all they also have a call maker working for them that takes rediculous long shots with a muzzleloader missing several times and then conveniently that isnt in the video about the hunt.

That said just leave the range out of it. I would agree though, and maybe im a purist my personal thought it that isnt even hunting that is shooting. I have been hunting my entire life and my longest shot has been maybe 250yds. I practce at 400 but there has always been a way to get closer and I have passed up some shots inside 400 that i jsut wasnt confident with. There is not way i would let my own 12yr old even try that shot, i have way more respect for the animals im hunting then take the chance on wounding. There is .001% of anyone in the world that at 12 yrs old has enough practice and knowledge of the set up to shoot at that range.

I dont hate on it becuase i cant do it with the right money and practice anyone can take those shots these days, but should we.......?? The odds of it ending badly increase significantly the farther the range. Wind, drop, animal steps so many factors, not syaing they cant happen at short range but you increase the chances the farther out. become a hunter and get close the reward will be worth it. Alright hate away but i agree with Seeth
