It’s a great shot. I read the article. That’s wide open country up there.

I wonder how many times she practiced the shot before? Or is she like my kids. Go to the range once or twice all summer. Then have a deer or elk standing past distances that they did not practice? My kids have been grumpy with me when I’ve had to say nope to far. Should have practiced more.

Nice bull! With modern equipment nothing stunning about the shot. A good shot sure, but very achievable. Especially on an elk vital size target.

Am I the only one feeling a bit disgusted by this article? It isn't so much the fact of a 600 yard shot, that is for a different discussion, but by the fact that the article highlights it being 600 yards. Why not just remove the range from the story? Shooting 600 yards takes practice and solid knowledge of the ballistics of your rifle and ammo and I'm not a fan of the article promoting the shot distance as a highlight of the event. She may be able to do it but does this make others now think they can when they shouldn't be?

Why are you only practicing to 500 yards but then in the field taking a 600 yard shot? The ballistics are significantly different between those two ranges and its another MOA into your on target shot variance.

Dads a gunsmith and routinely practices that far. I am sure there are kids capable of shots like that. Good equipment, data from shooting, a calculator, and understanding is all that it takes beyond good shooting skills.

Doesnt mean all of the people reading this can or should do that. I think some long range shooters, and perhaps this journalist, kind of make it akin to "8 mile packout" and other feats of manhood, but its sort of the opposite. It doesnt take much but some math to turn a dial. It should be about the terrain, cover, wind, etc.

I have never lost an animal with a rifle. I know people who have lost several. I have passed shots i could probably make, but why should that animal chance a suffering death? Articles like this tend to make people think "if she can, i can" instead of what people should think "do i have a near certain probability of a lethal hit and recovery."

Sorry for the fact the article "highlights" the range and that makes you butthurt, but what else bothers you, the size of the bull and that giant muley buck?

I see it totally different. There's no doubt Kaci has a father/mentor that is bringing her up into hunting. He has her practice at 500 yards, which easily prepares her for a 600 yard shot. With the proper equipment there is not an issue. Obviously she was trained to not to take a shot unless she was very steady. So far so good.

I would question the father allowing her to take such sizable animals at such a young age, though that is his/her choice. We are much less selective with the 12 year olds in my family. But that's us. Hopefully she continues hunting and has the drive even though future elk and deer she takes may not be as large as the two in the article. Nice job Kaci and dad!

You too are missing my point. My point has nothing to do with Kaci and their situation. My beef is with the author that choses to put in the front spotlight the distance and not express warning or caution or anything of the such to the readers about the situation. It just adds the garbage hunting media that continues to lead to more and more unethical behavior among the hunting group.

Sure can. Nothing else bothers me. Just don't want the range highlighted. 600 yards is not a normal range that anybody can just pick up and do - which is what happens when someone used to shooting a shotgun in the thick woods of the East reads an article about a 12 year being able to shoot 600 yards like its nothing and he thinks, well if she can do it so can I and heads to Montana and wounds 3 elk before finally knocking one down.
