Wyoming Elk

Was gonna draw general this year. Pulled it at the last minute. Gonna do a family vacation this year i think or just the wife and I. Never really have done that, I cut our honey moon 3 days short for a deer hunt I've still got a little guilty there. Might not be bad first time taking a a trip (more than a weekend) where I dont have to get up at 4 am the entire time. If anyone has any western vacation ideas I'm all ears btw, wife has never been. I ain't going to the beach.

Hard to beat some combination of the Rapid City, Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower, Bighorn Mtns, Cody, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, and Grand Teton circuit for a first timer.

Wyoming mainly because thats where I'd like to retire so im always looking to find that perfect place. But I wouldn't mind swinging up your way for a day given the time. All depends if were taking the kids or not if we are it might just be a Northwood wisconsin fishing swimming trip. And thats ok too. I've literally hunted every single minute of any day ive taken off of work my entire life. I'm still gonna hunt plenty but I dont have anything I need to prove anymore if that makes sense. One thing is for sure im not flying, checked prices on that, bout fell over.

It's crowded these days, but Glacier is a truly spectacular place. And, I was ticked off at APR, but their yurt tours look pretty cool I'll have to say. mtmuley

Bighorns would be good, spent a few minutes in Cody but that was passing through i think that'd be a good fit. Yellowstone would be ok but I've got no interest in staying anywhere near Jackson.

My wife and I did a Yellowstone week long trip last August staying in cabins inside the park. We had such a good time this spring we bought a new two person travel trailer so this August my wife and I are taking two weeks and going back through Wyoming with 2 night stays scheduled at KOA's a long the way. Devils Tower, Cody, Dubois, Fishing Bridge RV park in Yellowstone with the last 5 days open to come back from Yellowstone. The last 5 we left open so we can check out my Wyoming hunt area should I draw an elk tag, if no elk tag I'll try for an antelope tag. Tag or no tag the two week trip through Wyoming should be a great time, lots to see and do in the park and surrounding towns.

I’d second mt Rushmore you can spend a week there with your kids doing different stuff every day it’s a super cool area.

You would like the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody. Even my wife was impressed with all of the guns in there. Lots of historical stuff from his show circuit.
You could always go the 2nd week of August and swing through Sturgis! ;) Talk about a party!

Nick if you have any interest in the western history I would recommend like others visiting the black hills, Custer state park, mt rushmore, devels tower, go to cody gun musesuem/rodeo, and on the way back to Illinois stop by the Battlefield at Little Bighorn, hire a guide for one day of fishing at Ft. Peck , Glendive Creation musesuem, and stop by the Teddy Roosevelt ranch by the Little Missouri near Medora. You and your family will love it. We did several of these when my kids were younger and made some great memories.

I was in a similar situation on May 8th of withdrawing my elk app from WY. Like I mentioned before I have 5 points and applied with another friend with 5 points. With everything going on this year I really hope we can delay drawing for a year or two.

Are you not anticipating any point creep? 5 and 5.5 barely drew it last year. Only for groups. Maybe if you’re part of a group with someone that has 7+ I would feel more comfortable.
I can see a little point creep in the general but actually think the special and regular difference stabilizes, capping the regular general some. I also think the south and west will always be within 1 full point of each other, and may swing back and forth as people just try to draw. Mainly, point creep may also settle for general tags as people get sticker shock and either aren’t starting or are cashing out without re-upping.

Ive been to the museum, will definitely take the kids but I dont think they'll appreciate it for a few more years.

This sounds like a great trip but for a week that is not a lot of time in one place especially with kids. For a week driving, could split up into SD and Devils Tower or the further West sites. One of the best road trips my family has taken was to Badands and Black Hills.

Edited to add, maybe you have more than a week. If so, that would be awesome.
