Woodworking Hunt Talkers?

Many years ago, my dad told me he was going to have to cut down a tree at the family farm because it was going to block the lane. I wanted a new fireplace mantel, so I asked him to take the trunk to a local sawmill and get a 3"-ish thick beam out of it.

He did a great job and handed it over relatively quickly. I let it dry in my shed for about a decade before I finally flattened it and filled all the cracks and voids. And then it sat on my work bench for 6 months or so before I finally mounted it above the fireplace.

I'm so happy to finally get this done and now I have a workbench that I can see the top of again.

Last woodworking project for me for awhile. Used up some random pieces in the lumber pile. Bloodwood and maple top, bubinga bottom. Internal box for piece storage with hidden false bottom compartment for storing documents of national security

I haven't really decided yet. It all started off when I was clearing roads and ran across the tree blocking the road and it was too big to move with my d4. I called a buddy to give a hand and he brought his 661 Stihl and I switched to my d5 that's much heavier and more power.
It could end up as a new woodshed or maybe some log cabin type hunting blind. I'll have to see how the wood is when I get around to milling it.

I finally got around to getting it all the way home. It was nearly 40' long . I cut it into 3 lengths that would get the straightest lumber. I started to square it up some and haven't had a chance to get back to it.PXL_20260315_005043530.jpgPXL_20260315_005114014.jpg

Finished a bunch of coasters. Turned out not too bad.
Walnut ? did you use a stabilizer to keep them from splitting. I have found cutting cookies on a 45 degree angle prevent a lot of cracking but obviously they are not round anymore. Where are you at in Dakota, I'm in Brookings.

Black walnut. They didn't crack some shrank, they've been drying with the bark on for about a year before I cut them. Applied about 4 coats of lacquer a side. I'm in Clear Lake.

Rocking chair I just finished up for my 1 yr old grandson. Might have to add arm rest to keep him in it. Need to take it and see if its wide enough and at what height to add the arm rest at. 17" tall, 9" wide seat, 20" laminated black walnut runners. I made one of these 25 ? yrs ago but cannot remember who I made it for and no one else in family remembers either so I'm learning all over again.

Beautiful finish.

I bet you could sell a thousand of those egg holders if you wanted.
The problem for me is scaling, would need to buy a cnc router to actually produce enough to make money. But it is a thought (using a cnc router is like cheating though lol) and would also probably need to get a new lathe.

A reason to get a CNC and a new router... Sounds like you just talked yourself in it. ;)

Well it is a possibility, other things need to happen first though, like cleaning the barn shop out and fixing the electrical so I can have a place to use it. But nothing is happening until the "adults" in congress pass something to get me paid for the last month and half.
