Bastard!!!! Great pictures. The snowpack blows down here this year. I had two slopes collapse and fracture on me this weekend. Not a chance in hell of getting out on anything worth skiing anytime soon. Keep them coming.

Well i can't compete with those shots but i guess i better put up a few too. By far the best snow year i have had yet here in AK and the back country has been amazing thats for sure.

I can't believe you're a pro; I'm so much better than you are.

PS: I pole whacked this cornice... How many points?

Nice,we have 0 snow here so far this year.I was forgetting what winter usually looks like

Please forgive my ignorance. what are the clips on the point of the ski in picture 3?

For us coastal boys who seldom see the white stuff, explain what your ski setup is and how you get up there....

You guys are friggn animals! Those mountains are tall enough without the snow, couldn't imagine hiking/skinning up there from the highway!

If your getting gnarly and now one else is around to see it are you really getting gnarly?

Putm2sleep and 2 rocky we hike in, the clips you see are skins that go on the bottom of the ski so that ya don't slide backwards. you take them off at the top.

Awesome pics Mr. Brown amd Mr. Larry. Hope you guys realize how lucky you are.

Great photos from both of you. I've never been much of a skier, but no lift??? Sounds like the work to fun ratio is out of whack. Again, great pics!

Larry pretty much got it. Generally folks use a shorter and fatter ski than they would at the resort. You use a "touring" binding, in which the heel moves fore and aft. allowing your heels to be free, or to be locked in for the down. The bindings normally incorporate heel lifters for ease of uphill walking. Alpine Touring boots are lighter and softer than normal ski boots, they have a rockered sole and vibram on the bottom for booting. They have a ski/walk mode. In walk mode they boots flex at the ankle for ease of walking. In ski mode they don't, they feel like regular ski boots. On the skis themselves you use skins (think sharkskin) its smooth one way, rough the other. This means you can slide the ski up the hill, and the rough surface prevents sliding backwards. So basically you go up the hill with your boots and bindings in walk mode with skins on your skis. At the top of a sick nasty pow line, you peel your skins off, change to ski mode on your bindings and boots, and rip the shit out of said line.

Everyone wears avalanche beacons, and carries shovels and probes. It's not a sport to get into lightly or unaware. I'd rather go into a nasty patch of alders after a wounded grizzly than travel in avalanche country unaware and unprepared. Bears are badasses, but mother nature is nothing to F### with. Mountains will kill you quick.
WOW, just gorgeous. Thanks for sharing. Is this a heli drop, or what?
No heli. All hike access. We are fortunate enough to have the Chugach as our playground.

uuummm.. why do you think I got the gopro?? So everyone can see me getting gnarly... :hump:

Those are some truly awesome photos but have to say looking at them I couldn't help but wonder when the avalanche pictures were coming.

Stay safe.
