Who's ready for another Seeth and Wife Adventure to AK?

Sleeping at an airport is always a joy!

Flight out to Petersburg in about 2 hours. Time for some coffee. My cousin from CO is already there and met with the guy helping us with the use of his boats. We all agree that today we need to play it safe and go to plan B - we won't be running the entire way to our destination and stopping short for one night. The 20 mile run up the main straight is just too risky in these boats and not worth it. Way better weather tomorrow to do it.

Smart move a friend and I got in a hairy situation on POW with rough seas. We were lucky to get back to the harbor in one piece. AK weather will kill you quickly.

Good luck @seeth07 .... keep the hull side down buddy!

Looks like a REALLY wet week up north- the Mrs and I will be heading that direction today ourselves albeit on a bit bigger boat. No bullets for Marv on this trip, its all camera and tourist time ...if it rains too hard we'll just come in from the balcony and order a round lol.

Yup it's really rainy and windy here in ketchikan right now. Looks to be about normal all week which was completely expected - it's SE Alaska afterall

Hope it went well, can’t wait to read the details! I was just pricing out a SE AK fishing/crabbing/blacktail trip for 2026.

Was up at the campground Saturday and wondered when you would get back. Post away!

OK, no more waiting for the slacker, lets get this back up and rolling.

Arrival into Petersburg and we got picked up by my cousin who was already there and setup with a vehicle from the guy we rented the boats from. We headed right down to the docks and carted our gear and coolers to the boats. Shortly afterwards, Cliff who rented us the boats met us to give us the break down of the boats and went over a few troubleshooting procedures. I had made myself some homemade crab pots for this trip so we spent the next hour or so unpacking everything, assembling the pots and make trips to the cannery to get ice stuffed into the live well in the back of the boats.

It never calmed down so the decision remained final that we wouldn't be making the run today to the cabin but rather just spend the evening in Petersburg. We got places to stay arranged and then since we had the boats rented, we both took them out primarily to look for herring and hopefully catch a bunch. We also set lines for a little bit trolling for salmon. It was all a fail as all we caught was flounder and greenlings.

Got up bright and early the next morning to begin the long run to the cabin we had selected for our stay. Well perhaps not "bright and early" as that would have been 3:30am due to it being summertime in Alaska but 5am is still early.

Before we returned to the dock the night before, we had put out a few crab pots. On the way out, we stopped and checked those and much to our surprise, they were loaded with Tanners! Only problem is they were all females :( Good news is the homemade pots are verified to work.

It was a gorgeous day and a super easy and clean boat ride the entire run to the head of the pass where our cabin was in. We hit some rough 2-3 foot waves due to some really strong currents in some areas but other than that it was mostly a calm flat sea for the trip. Certainly made the right move leaving this morning rather than the day prior.

With it being such a good day, I wanted to take advantage and fish right away some spots that were very exposed to the main Sumner strait. First spot was a complete bust as the current was ripping so hard we couldn't even find bottom with 3lb's of weight. Moved just a couple hundred yards and got out of that ripping current and I didn't even end up finding bottom before fish on! Handed the rod to my wife and she catches the first fish of the trip - a nice big cod.

During the quick photo op, the third on our boat hooks up, another cod.

It was non stop furious cod action and we caught enough to supply some crab pot bait as well as a good start to our cod fish filet pile for taking home.
