So, What constitutes a "wolf lover"? I have been involved in wolf discussions on other sites and accused of the aforementioned. I wanted to ask the question on this site as I really value the opinions and knowledge of the members here. My stance is the wolves are here and I am trying to learn all I can about them and the issues involved surrounding them. I hunt them when I can and have taken one. I don't think I am a wolf lover. mtmuley

If you are on MM, a wolf lover is anyone who does not believe the barstool rumors that wolves run in packs of 100, eat children from playgrounds, and are the demise of civilization as we know it.

Even if you admit wolves have some impact and you hunt/trap them, failure to subscribe to the SFW/BGF Little Red Riding Hood fairy tales will put you in the wolf lover crowd.

You could fill all your wolf tags, every year, but if you go so far as to even imply that there are more dynamics to elk populations than just wovles, you are definitely a wolf lover on MM.

If you size them for asshats, as is usually the case, then you are in the Wolf Lover Hall of Fame.

I've been called a wolf lover, wolf hippie, wolf fag, you name it, Then, I also have 400+ death wish comments for airing a wolf episode and at last count, almost 80,000 people had signed a petition to get Randy Newberg and his radical wolf hatred off the airways.

Point being, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Folks who can't carry on a debate have no choice but to categorize people into groups they can dismiss, given they're incapable of anything above a Kindergarten-level conversation and need four drunk buddies nodding their heads in agreement that wolves are the reason they haven't shot an elk from their truck in the last six years.

OK. I hugged one. I do love them. mtmuley

LoL @ Theat. I'm going to have to disavow knowing you. You might become a detriment to my good reputation. :)

Randy hit the nail on the head. I'm also a "wolf lover" on MM's, right next to you and BuzzH. A few months back the 3 of us were involved in a heated thread on there about wolves and how good the elk hunting is currently.

I received a PM out of the blue ripping Buzz H apart. The fella went so far as to tell me Buzz's position at work, the bills he has lobbied for and against and basically summarized it up as Buzz being a wolf lover and anti-hunter. The PM was about 2 full length pages in word. I'll try to dig it up.

Personally, I think wolves are kind of bad ass. I would love to see their numbers cut back by about 40-60% in Idaho no doubt, to help balance the ecosystem. As they should be managed just like every other species. BUT, I think they are mysteriously majestic predators. Almost as bad ass as mt. lions. I think it's awesome that we get the chance to view them from time to time, and to have the opportunity to shoot one if it presents itself.

So I guess I'm a wolf lover too.

My feelings exactly. I think wolves are an awesome critter! Having said that an aggressive management plan needs to always be in place to manage them correctly. Most the guys who say 'kill em all" hardly ever chase wolves once the big game season is over. I got in a heated debate in a bar (not smart on my part) about how wolves arent as bad as every one makes them out to be. Guys started ripping into me, and then I asked how many of them hunted wolves since December 1st, none of them had, I then asked how many of them killed an elk this year, 3 out of 4 of them did. I did get a little bit of respect from them after that.

I was privileged enough to get to work on a wolf/moose project in Isle Royale Nat Park. At the same time a good friend of mine was working with the GYA wolves. We both got to see some amazing behaviors and gain a true appreciation for them. They have a place in this world, but as with most things there has to be a balance.

(This is not intended for any specific person. Its intended for most of the people who are passionate about wolves.)

Its just as bad if you say wolves are a problem in a specific instance. You are automatically classified as a vocal local redneck and told that its something else causing the decline in elk. Everyone thinks their opinions apply to all elk habit. Good thing the state bio's are being a little more drainage specific than most of us.
Pot, kettle...Kettle, pot.

No thread on MM is truly complete w/o an argument about SFW/BGF. Buzz probably has more hunting knowledge in his pinky finger than whoever was trying to rip on the guy.

I am new to most of these hunting forums...glad I am not the only one labeled this. Over on hunting-washington I was called a wolf-lover and several people started trying to say I was an anti-hunter sneaking around on their site!! What Randy posted above is exactly how I would describe them.

I come from rural Idaho, support responsible state wolf management and would shoot one if I ever had (the legal) chance...but on some of these forums...if you even try to suggest any other factors that might be associated with elk declines...well...you're just another wolf lover.

Right there with ya bro.

I think the three of us are the only ones on hunt-wa that feel this way, which is funny because most on there have never hunted wolf country.

Jon (AKA deerslyr)

I think you be correct:)

Actually, there are some others. However, they've learned the futility of trying to speak with facts and reality vs. emotional rhetoric.

I talked with a biologist here a few years back during spring bear season. I had watched a big boar grid a hillside and asked him about it. He said that black bears have the highest mortality rate on elk than any other predator bar none. I'm not sure if that data is still valid but to lay blame solely on one predator isn't accurate. Now I truly believe wolves have had a big impact especially with how and where the elk are wintering and hanging out in general. Obviously bears aren't persuing them in the winter like lions and wolves are but he said in a study he was doing on a game reserve he watched one black bear eat 6 calves in a meadow.
I'm a wolf lover.....I'd love to shoot one.
