What drones are to hunting….

Research, observation, and determination of need are always my first steps in making purchases decisions.

But to be honest, I'm just as likely to buy an FFS system to fish for bass as I am to buy a feeder to hunt deer.
So you don't have, and haven't used one. Got it.

I've fished without one for far longer than I've fished with one. If they went away tomorrow, I would still catch fish. Same way I caught them prior. People who weren't catching fish before FFS aren't magically good at fishing now because they have one.

Can guys catch more fish because of them? Yes of course. Some people are so absorbed by them, that they just stare at the screen all day instead of fish.

FFS certainly isn't the golden ticket for always catching fish. I do think it could have an impact on certain fish species, especially crappies. In certain situations, old school fishing will still out fish guys that are dinking around with ffs.

I do hope more guys start getting excited about growing big deer on private property. Instead of applying for MT general elk tags!

Good example of very basic drone capability and why I think they have no place in hunting.

Here's a picture from 300 ft up of a portion of the Regulating Reservoir near Helena. Just a photo.

Now, I have not moved the drone at all, and have simply zoomed in on the two dots in the water at center of the photo. 56X Hybrid zoom, digitally stabilized. Those kayakers are about 800 meters from the drone.

Both of those images are significantly downsized to fit into HuntTalk and their native resolution is quite a bit better.

Seeing drones with object detection in action, I could imagine a very-near term state of affairs where a drone could be popped up, and any animals within the field of view be identified for you. Thermal would have a lower resolution, but one could grid a 200 acre patch of wherever at 400 ft and really identify most anything of size alive in it in 15 minutes or so.

The technology is really taking off, and could do a lot of the hunting part of hunting for you, which is the last thing hunting needs.

BIL is buying a drone for "scenery photography" on his fall hunting trip to Alaska. 'Says he would never harass wildlife, to which I pointed out, "You won't even know you have until you have!"
I'm pretty sure AK considers flying a drone the same as flying a bush plane. Can't hunt the day you fly it.

I'm definitely not it favor of drones. But im also not in favor of most technological advances in relation to hunting.

I appreciate some states putting more restricted weapons seasons in place.

Back to the thread topic, this sonar is getting rediculous. This morning fishing, I was sitting catching some fish on a crib. I watched two boats slowly cruise in by me with their faces just glued to the screen. Making circles then they would stop, cast a few times and catch a fish or two and then repeat. They were using it to follow the school of crappie i was waiting out that would pass by every 30 minutes or so

They are only banned for hunting. You can use them to scout or to take photographs including of wildlife so long as your not harassing wildlife
From just reading on AK fwp page it seems that they are banned at anytime during your hunt and can only be used for pictures after your hunt has ended, meaning once you've taken an animal and it's on the ground.

Maybe I’m missing something

I thought the thread topic was drones for hunting....lol

It's cheating, plain and simple. Technology has its place in the world, but should definitely be limited when it comes to hunting.

Technology has taken over the entire hunting world. Big companies pushing the easy way to be a successful hunter. But in reality, the hunter is just gullible, and each new wonder item is making them less of a hunter. Where will it stop? Who will decide enough is enough?

How about no electronics no matter the season. Including scopes and range finders. GPS and InReach type excluded for safety reasons. Get back to hunting and try to level the playing field. Lets get back to fair chase, sadly it's been tweaked so much it seems to me to become unfair chase.

Well now you know my opinion I'm sure many will disagree but that's only their opinion. PS I have a range finder and have used it rifle hunting but in hindsight to me it was not the right thing to do. Archery hunting, I have not benefited from it and I'm good with that.

Nope, op was stating that fishing sonar today is the same as drones are to hunting. So its about how dumb the new fancy imaging sonar and yet its not being banned like it should be
Damn, I guess I really have my head up my ass today...
