As I was packing up my crap to head back to Helena today, my wife said, when you are down in Helena, look around for a shotgun for me(as I wrenched my back standing up to quickly, as I must have heard something that sounded like, "buy a gun").

Turns out the little incident she had last week with the dog fighting a mountain lion off in the darkness in the woods, of course while I was here in Helena, freaked her out a little. She said, is there a way to have a flashlight on the gun? She said that holding the spotlight and trying to figure out an AR-15 was just too much. I said, why yes, I will see what I can do. (hee hee hee, big grin headed out the door)

Yeah, it was about 10:00 at night, I was on the phone with her, she said she was letting the dogs out one more time before heading to bed. Kids were in Eureka with the grandparents for spring break. She had just got out of the tub or something. She just starts screaming, Pasha come, Pasha come, something is killing Pasha!!! I am yelling to put the phone down, get the spotlight and the gun and get down there, its probably a lion. All she can say, while she is fumbling with the gun is, "I don't have any pants on!". All I can say is "hurry up". Again, "I don't have any pants on....". "Get your ass down there!", I yell again.
So she is headed down the driveway with the spot light,(I guess, I am in Jefferson City waiting for a return call), she is screaming at the dog, which finally comes from behind the camper, she can hear something in the tree, screaming back. Grabs the dog and heads back to the house.
I finally get the call back, at the picture of my pasha dog's nose cut open. Has some other punctures and small cuts, but not bad actually. He is hopped up. He is really hard to check for injury because he is Pyrennes/shepher/wolf mix, and that fur is so thick you can't believe it. It all ended well, and was a far cry from something killing Pascha, although I am sure it sounded like it.

Bottom line is, she wants a gun with a flashlight on the end. So the question is, do I go with the 870 or the mossy 500?

Set her up with a pistol grip tactical stock for reduced recoil and I think the thumb actuated safety on the mossburg is much more user friendly for the person who doesn't shoot a lot. Both are proven platforms but the ease of operation on the 500 safety is huge when it matters most. Just my 2 cents.

Seems to me if she is comfortable with a pump some sort of "riot master"/police shotgun with extra magazine capacity would be reassuring. If the pump action is too much to deal with maybe an autoloader with the plug removed.Must be a way to mount a flashlight to just about anything. Some women have nerves of steel,if this doesn't apply here maybe see if you can pick up some cojones on ebay.;)

LOL. We have been laughing about this almost daily. I had her friend call and ask her if she needs pants to kill a mountain lion.

She is pretty tough when she needs to be. All kind of crap seems to happen when I am gone. Never on the weekends.

She just thought she was losing the dog that just lives for our kids and is the rule about one of them has to out with the kids if they are outside at my house. He is a protective bastard. I got him on a trail cam here.

You can get her a youth model 870 20ga and then mount a cheap flashlight under the barrel. That's what my mom is armed with. Works good too because you can drop the hammer on an empty chamber and then all they have to do is rack the slide when the time comes. Pretty fool-poof in that regard. Also, the flashlight makes for a good aiming device when paired with #4 buck...just center the beam on the target and pull the trigger

It works pretty slick and you can put just a regular old flashlight in it. Something like this: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/61...e-extension-barrel-clamp-12-gauge-steel-matte

I have both, and I too like the safety on the Mossberg. It's easy to find and operate in a hurry. A 500 will cycle even if its full of dirt. Both are great for what you guys need but I'd give the nod to the 500. mtmuley

I've got an 870 Tactical with the extended safety, just rub it with the side of your trigger finger and it is off safety. Ditto on the Streamlight, I have the TLR-2 with the light and laser, just laser, or just light. It is mounted on a Picatinny mount that replaces the mag tube bracket. It would be a good cat killer.

All those suggestions would work fine. I like the idea of a shotgun protecting who ever is behind the muzzle...only problem is that everything in front of the muzzle is fair game when that pattern spreads out....might hit your dog if its in a fight with a cat. That said, if I was in the dark without my pants on facing a mountain lion...I'd hope for a 12 guage with buckshot any day. As for the dog, he can get burried with what is left of the cat.

drahthaar, people who haven't had very extensive training can have real problems with trigger control on all semi autos. A self or home defense situation is alot different then a leisurely afternoon at the range.

Youtube is full of vids of folks freaking out with the first shot and just continuing to pull the trigger till the semi is empty.

Theres a reason that the pros use pump actions. IMO.

Stick with a pump and find a good CC course with range time for her. Then you'll have to buy her a handgun as well. ;)
