Weirdest Things Found

Last year in Alaska I was flown in and dropped off solo , first time in the bush . I hiked up the mountain and was looking out at the view while thinking I could be the only person to stand right here , ever .
Then I looked down at my feet and there was a dime that someone had placed on a rock ledge and it had been there a while , partially covered by dirt . I didn't think it had fallen there , out of a pocket , it looked deliberate .

Made me laugh at how silly I was , thinking I was the first to be there .
I have done the same many times. Besides the original post and what I found I also on another trip fairly deep climbed out on a rock out cropping. It stuck out unusually far for the area and had a significant drop to the tundra below. I crawled the last 10 feet. As I lay there looking at Caribou and the scenery I noticed (3) things. 1st was there was wolf crap everywhere. 2nd was a 280 AI cartridge laying there in a crack. Although remote and visions of being the only one to find that spot obviously I was not. 3rd was a grizzly crossing an opening 300 yds away. I regretted not taking my rifle and was to scared to stand up and run for the gun. I shimmied back and got my gun but by that time he was in the brush on the other side. Live and learn. I have since spent days at that spot. Some years lots of Caribou. The year these photos were taken none. A fire had shifted the migration. It is a great moose spot as well. A good one taken there last year. The year of the photos we only saw cows, and a bull that IMO was easily legal following a hot cow headed away from us. One of my favorite spots to be on earth.

One of my favorite finds was a small stream in Michigan. Hoxeyville area I hunting a lot with my dog , pats and woodcocks.
A small stream came out of the ground , just a small cut bank , and traveled about two hundred yards then just went back underground.
Clean water I drank from many times , I tried to find it whenever I hunted there .

Maybe not weird but neat ?

I've done a good amount of grouse & WC hunting in the area as well as WC banding when I had a permit.

Kind of neat to see the name come up.

We built the cabin on the corner of 11 Mile and Twin Creek in 1976 , my dad and I . Hunted all around , bought my steaks and jerky at the Dublin General Store .

Wow! Funny to hear this town name. I run 37 to 115 occassionally to Frankfort for sslmon fishing to avoid 131 BS. Nice ride and the town name just locks into your memory!

It was a fun place to grow up , on the weekends anyway . Spent many a weekend canoeing the Pine river and fishing in front of the weir on Little Manistee . Mostly riding dirt bikes in the CCC trails .

I found a little gerber bottle nailed to a tree through the lid. It didn’t have anything in it just a glass jar sticking sideways off a tree. I stuck a dollar bill in it and screwed it back on for the next person to find.

I was hiking up in Spanish peaks and following an avalanche chute back down to the river. I’m always on the lookout for cool rocks/gems. I saw this rock that looked “soft” so I grabbed it up on my way down the mountain. Soapstone. I’d never found any but I knew right away what it was. Thought it’d be cool to carve something out of it so threw it in the pack. Wasn’t until I got home that I noticed someone else had beat me to it.. talented too… figured it was probably @frequently banned troll…
I still wonder how long ago it was carved..

Doing stream surveys in middle of nowhere NW SD a number of years ago. My colleague and I were doing pebble counts to measure the substrate. You reach down to the substrate blindly, pick up the first piece of substrate you touch, measure it, and repeat over and over. I reached down without looking and picked up a .30 cal round nose bullet. Not strange but what were the odds of the millions of pebbles I could have picked up?

Nailing jars to a tree in that fashion was a traditional way of marking mining claims. There would be a paper inside the jar with the claim descripting and name of the owner.

I spend a fair amount of time in that part of the state. Lotta history up there. Lots of army/native conflicts and battles. Thanks for sharing.

Probably not in my area because there aren't many screams but I'm in Harding County. There are lots of neat things around here.

Not really weird but was deer hunting my cousins farm in Kansas several years ago and found a fanny pack near some persimmon trees.
I would take the same path to my stand every day. One day I couldn't find my bow string release. I slowly retraced my steps and while looking for my release I found a fanny pack with over $400 cash inside along with a Kansas driver license. I returned it to my cousin and her husband. Come to find out it belonged to their handyman that worked on their rent houses. He lost it a few months before while loafing around the farm. He was sure happy to have it returned.

Here’s another story of someone else finding something of mine that they probably thought was a crazy, weird and lucky find. I stopped at a gas station near the highway entrance to get some coffee a couple hours before daylight. Apparently I’d set my wallet right behind the back windshield where the bed starts, on the pickup. (A spot I often set my coffee and drive off also)
Obviously not realizing I’d set it there, we drove 25 miles or so before we left pavement and another 8-10 miles cruising mountain roads. We did some good hikes down into some nasty stuff and I found a moose paddle down in the dark timber. We milled around down there for a bit looking for the match, to no avail. When we hiked up and out and got back to the truck, I realized I’d lost my wallet. We drove the same road(s) and hiked BACK up to the peak we glassed from that morning. I was convinced it had fallen out when I was sitting, laid back against my pack with my knees up, glassing. Nope. Not there. I decided that if it was in that hellhole where that paddle came from- the woods can keep it. Certain it was a goner, we got in the truck and headed back toward the blacktop. As we were coming around the corner still on the dirt road, a white jeep was oncoming and waving us down. When we rolled the window down they asked if one of us was named _______? I couldn’t believe it! They said that a SXS went through a big mudpuddle in the road which parted the water, unveiling an open tri-fold wallet. Dude said he literally couldn’t see it and had to feel for it in the puddle when the water was settled. How lucky!? I gave them both like $40 each or whatever was in there. I was so happy. Still have an iPhone in the BHDL NF somewhere though… 🤣

I have never related to a post as much as I do this one.
