UTAH PRICE INCREASE

Its so rarely a problem drawing 2 really good tags with the same dates I dont worry much about it.

Its a really good problem to have as far as problems go.
I gotta spread my problems out. 🙂

I showed my (ridiculously frugal) wife the Utah app email with the permit fees and told her the statistical odds. She’s thinking drawing a bison permit at $5k would be great.

To me that’s an unspoken green light to apply for bison in Wyoming, Arizona, and South Dakota, in addition to MT and some reservations too.. 🤣

We just take different approaches is all. I also tell my wife the odds are .01 I just leave the 5k part out and tell it doesn’t really matter anyways

gonna take it to dang near the last minute before i put in,,still waiting on n m results to come out if posible

I don't even bother to check overlaps in these states any more. Not with 1-3% odds lol. Used to until maybe ten years ago. I even made an Excel overlap chart lol. These days I apply very early as soon as states open. More concerned about forgetting at the last minute.

A bunch of guys on HT said they were going to quit last year...but this is an addiction, and you can't reason with addicts, including myself.
True.

I'm in for one more year since we were able to apply on last years license, but dang, it's getting expensive with wife and three kids.
Costs the same to buy points as apply you’d be dumb not to just apply for a lottery ticket type tag. Idk why anyone would just buy points in Utah
Shhhh

My goal in Utah was always to draw a low-tier (relative to Utah) random elk tag as soon as I could and then be out. It would be tough to swallow paying $2k now for a mediocre hunt with these changes. But, the odds aren’t hardly worth playing the game for a mid-upper level tag there. I didn’t have to buy a license this year, so still applied. Next year I’ll have a bigger decision to make. With only 13 points it probably makes sense to bail. Utah was central to my plan to shoot at least one decent bull in my life, so I’ll probably end up sticking with it. I did bail on all other species.

My strategy was the same as yours and my thoughts now are also same as yours. Except I have 17 elk. I don’t think that’s enough and am debating if $2k is worth a low tier hunt. At 13 I hate to say it but I’d very likely walk. Sucks to be put in this position.
