The day before the opener I watched a black wolf chase a bull and some cows into the timber which in turn messed up my play on another group of elk in the morning and then tonight I'm glassing in another area and at least 4 start howling in the small drainage I'm in. The elk numbers are in the toilet for these areas or at least they aren't a fraction of what they were 20 years ago. I'm starting to feel a little rage towards these animals and am really afraid of what the elk numbers are going to be in another 20 years. These areas are steep and rugged and I just don't see many hunters having much of an impact on the wolf numbers.

Thanks for reminding me to pick up my wolf tag. I'm no wildlife expert , but the feds may have let this get a bit out of hand. Our FWP could have taken charge of managing wolves long before they were allowed to . They are the resident experts on our wildlife, not the U.S. Government. The elk are having to use the dense timber and deadfall to make good their escape. I still miss the Gardiner late hunts.

You would think that the billions hunters spend each year in this country we would have more say in the matter. But until we really stick together and demand something be done not much will happen. We waste time fighting among our selves.

a little late now, but I suppose all that the local hunters can do about it is to band together and hunt them as hard or harder than they do elk and mule deer. No small task I'm sure. We have coyotes here and putting a dent in the population is still difficult in areas that are far from "wilderness" classification. Please keep shooting guys!

Yea at least we can shoot/trap them if we get a chance. I'm not complaining about that. I just don't believe that we are going to be able to keep the numbers in check with the rate of re-population.

So are they too far or what? I'm sure you've got a tag. Were you hunting them last winter there?

We have wolves in most the areas that I hunt elk in. They are doing things really differently, and don't stay in one place very long. The wolf counts aren't going up, they are actually going down. You just happen to be in the middle of a packs home range. Hunt a wolf, and post a picture, because when you decide to go after one, then they will disappear.

Looks like just the opposite of your post is happening. http://missoulian.com/news/state-an...cle_921ac0d2-40ef-11e3-aefb-001a4bcf887a.html

When wolves are chasing the same elk that you are, a guy tends to be more emotional than logical.

Shoots---I can verify they were there last year, the year before, and the year before that in the area lawnboy is referring and yes, they have been hunted there. I wish they were hunted more but it is I suspect far more difficult to hunt them in this particular drainage than in many places where people are killing them.

I guess all I'm saying is I agree that there are some emotional ties to these suckers, but I disagree that the opposite of what Lawnboy posted is accurate. It may be in easier places to hunt in WY, but I've spent countless days in the drainage Lawnboy is referring to and I too think its going to be hard to get the numbers down where we need them for the elk population to ever recover there.

Lawnboy and critter, I can go and camp there for up to a week. Got no tags for, nore future interest in going back at a later date for elk. PM me if you would like to see someone go in there on a wolf specific hunt. Need a name to the drainage/trailhead. twodot

For you Bozeman wolf hunters this was this morning up Hyalite coming out of Bozeman creek it was following a cow and calf moose. I think I might be getting Toby Bridges syndrome. :(

I was pretty pissed when during archery season, between me and my hunting buddy we had visuals on wolves 4 straight trips out. No rifle with us, just a pistol etc.

It sucked and the elk wouldn't bugle at all, but we did still get visuals on elk within 500 yards of a lone wolf. We saw elk on each of those days if I recall. The wolves won't stay where there is no food, they don't eat sage brush, berries or bark...

Sorry guys. I just had a good hunt ruined by guys driving where they were not supposed to. I walked out to a rim and sat for 3 hours in an ice cold wind waiting on some whitetails only to have a guy drive straight to me and spook the only deer in the area. Not to vilify hunters from any one state but there were 3 truckloads of Californians working that place with their pickups like it was grandpa's back forty. That gets old.

I had a bull elk snuffed from underneath me by a guy who drove his quad to the top of the mountain while we walked it in the dark. The one that stings the most though is the first wolf on the day before the opener that blew out an entire drainage that held a and absolute giant bull.
So far I've called and reported with picts multiple wheeler incidents but like I said I want to snuff as many wolves as possible. Apparently I have at least 3 different packs roaming the areas I hunt:eek: Or maybe it's one pack with a 60 mile radius and has muchos amounts of dogs in it.
