The official 2025 Wyoming elk hunt for Dave N thread.

You’re failing to see that wasn’t the goal. It would have been a byproduct of the goal. The goal was camp, food, and friends.

Realistically the chance of success on a public land elk for Dave was low single digits. There was a lot of negative factors at play for an already low harvest percentage. The fact that we saw elk and he got to try and make a play on them was a win.

Celebrate the win.
To add to this, it's not unusual for it to take several years for someone to kill their first one, especially a bull, even with great help.

Dave is obviously a great guy, we can all tell that even though most of us have never met him. I have little doubt when he's ready to go for another try he'll have lots of support once again, and some lessons learned on how to hunt them the way he needs to hunt them. Sounds like a wall tent camp and some good horses in moderate terrain might be the ticket if Dave can learn to ride a bit. Wyoming is a great place for elk, but I kinda think Montana might be worth a try for him, less trophy potential maybe but I'd guess a lot more options for huntable terrain, relatively easy to get a tag too.

Awesome job to all involved, keep working on your health Dave and get out there again, and congrats on your first elk hunt, I'd say it was a success even without notching a tag.

700 miles down. Maybe a few more hours and I'll pull it over for the night. No rush. I have to stop an hour from home for some new flavors of Tillamook ice cream for my daughter and myself! :ROFLMAO: Place will be closed if I drive straight through. Ok, time to hit it.

Thank you for sharing your trip with us. I’m glad you enjoyed the experience. Wish it had ended with you getting an elk but sometimes things don’t work out.

I have really enjoyed your adventure Dave and it looks like the going was tough but you guys made a fun time of it. Those meals themselves made that trip worth it. Part of the fun is who you're with and enjoying camp time.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. A successful trip does not always end in a punched tag!

I have had lots of “successful” hunts that didn’t end in a notched tag.

@Dave N, I have enjoyed your journey!

Des Moines for the night. Somewhere around 900 miles. Hopefully I'm going to sleep through the heater noise and traffic on the interstate!

It’s been one long ass ride…

Keep your eyes on the road and make it home safe. Im glad this all ultimately came together for you! We were all hoping that you’d come out with some huge bull but as was said, there is no easy elk. That’s the daggum truth! Apply for Montana Wyoming or Colorado and when you draw, I am certain there will be folks to help you try again!
