Talk me out of this...

Do it @2rocky
If it was former fire department vehicle, I would be it was well maintained.
You won't be sorry. I bought a diesel back in late 2017, and I will never look back. I will always have a diesel as one of my vehicles.

Unless you do a lot of heavy towing i wouldn't buy it. We switched back to gas after realizing we just weren't towing like we used to. Everything thing is more expensive to repair and front end components wear much faster under the weight of the heavy diesel engine. Tires included. Best of luck!!

Hauling, towing, should be good. Probably rides rough empty. Why does it only have 95K mi? Did they save it for offroad, like wildland firefighting and rescue? Any owners since it was a firetruck?

Old and simple with low miles would be hard to beat for a diesel that you want to use hard. I’d buy it.

I own one with a crew cab. I f...ing hate it. Has 103,000 on it I think. We use it on the beach in AK each summer and I have been wishing it would quit running so I could throw it away for ten years. Sits for 10 months and starts up and works for another year. I feel like I am going to get stuck at all times but doesn't. Rides too good for a 1 ton but of course the tires are half flat for the sand. Gets poor mileage but we drive it about 1500 miles a year so the $7 dollar diesel doesn't matter that much. I should quit bitching about it but am afraid if I start liking it , then it will quit and I will have to pay through the nose to replace it. So yeah, buy it but expect it to suck.

The number on the truck tells me it was a Fire Chief's vehicle

must have been a busy department with that many miles on a 96 unless somebody else has owned it since. We just sold 1985 chevy with 11,000 miles. The trucks on our rural FD are beat the shit because outside of some training the only time they are driven is on calls & they get driven like they were stolen!
