You are seeing the spots of an elk calf. I've seen calves in the fall that were definitely small running with the herd, but never anything even close to as small as this calf.

No, found that just inside the hind 1/4 by the pecker from a frontal shot from my buck. The petals did their job and destroyed the insides. Didn’t lose an oz of meat from the shot and the buck didn’t make it 5 feet.
