I applied and drew a late season (Jan. 1st - 31st) coastal cow elk tag here in OR. I have always hunted Rocky Mountain elk, so this was going to be a first for me. The area received about 5-6 inches of fresh snow on Sunday, Jan. 1st so it was a no brainer to be in the forest on Monday. After hiking down an old logging road for a little over a mile, my friend and I came to a large clearcut with fresh elk tracks leading into it. After scouring the cut with our binoculars, we spotted some elk on the opposite side of the cut. The wind was perfect, the terrain was perfect and so was the stalk. Twenty minutes later we were 60 yards from seven feeding elk. One shot from the 7mm-08 and I had my first Roosevelt elk and my first animal of 2017. Should be some mighty fine eating!DSC07830.jpgDSC07833.jpgDSC07835.jpgDSC07837.jpgDSC07820.jpg

Outstanding job! I killed a cow a couple years back that had ivories worn so low, that I did not even dig them out. Great shot placement, too!:hump:
