Snake stories

I bred and raised corn snakes and sold them at reptile shows through high school and into college. This is me after help (wife) 🤪. I’ve caught a couple hatchling bull snakes and raised them up but ended up releasing them where I found them. I like leaving wild snakes in the wild now (after I catch and photograph them of course).
I get it , my cousin was that way as a kid. He would jump on a snake to catch it . Me , not so much .
In Michigan we had Blue Racers that would get over six foot long , and if you chased them they would turn around and charge you while shaking their tail .

I love snakes. Saw the first bull snake of the year just last night while out walking to pick asparagus.

Pretty sure they den somewhere around us. Pretty much every May I see one or two, a few years back they were all over. Caught 3 in like 15 minutes, I was like a kid in a candy store. Few days later I found 2 more, maybe they were the same ones idk.

Townsend also has melanistic (black) phase garter snakes. Lewis and Clark wrote about them in their journal. Had the perfect shirt on that day.

Both times we’ve floated the Smith River I’ve seen and caught a nice bull snake. Probably the biggest bull snake I’ve caught. Also seen a garter eating a fish both times.
No matter how un-venomous or friendly they may be!

Seems like I run into a couple snakes a year chasing grouse. Seems like 50/50 bull snakes and prairie rattlers. Talked to a fella at the bar a couple years ago that guided rattler hunts around the area. Typically targeted them on cool sunny fall mornings when they’re sunning themselves in prairie dog towns. He had some interesting pictures and stories. My dog doesn’t seem to give a rip about them, which works for me.

Tiny little guy from a couple years ago. He was as ornery as they come. Tried to strike a handful of times while I prodded at him.
