Sleep Apnea and Hunting ?

During our HT Bear hunts - I recall a friend of one of us joined and had sleep apnea. He had a portable CPAP and it was informative and quite interesting to understand his rationale for the use. He slept like a baby.

Myself? I've been advised I likely have a medical level of need for a CPAP though I'm not at the level to take it on. I sleep on my side and thus far able to avoid the need. Even though it was really informative and boosted my interest to consider a CPAP, I'm not there yet.

I don't recall his name though I believe he was an initial invite of @jryoung and became a returning hunter for future HT Spring Bear Hunts. Full respect if he opts not to weigh in on the convo though it was a good bit of info.

That was my buddy Paul, it's his regular CPAP but he has a portable battery pack that can charge off a 12v. It's gotten better recently as the state has funded batteries for medical baseline electric customers in high fire areas. My father in law has one too, and they just sent us this which is pretty rad.

Why are you on a waiting list? There shouldn't be a list... I'll sell you mine 'cause I don't wear it lol.

Doctors must be incentivized to prescribe CPAP machines for sleep disorders. I haven’t heard of anyone that went to those sleep centers that didn’t end up being told they have sleep apnea.

I have slept all my life and if they told me I needed one, I would be suspicious of their analysis. I don’t know how anyone could sleep better wearing a mask with tubes and a ventilator…

You’re clueless man - prob shouldn’t comment if you don’t have any idea

I knew from my sore throat and being tired all day that something wasn't right. Plus my snoring was creating issues in my relationship...

My Dr. said 100% of the patients he’s sent for a sleep study have had apnea and ended up with a cpap.
I can certainly tell the difference since I’ve had one.
Fortunately, I didn’t have any trouble getting use to wearing one.
I have the pillow-style cpap mask

Who are you to make that comparison? It is just an observation that makes me wonder how so many people are affected by something they never knew was wrong. The percentages are pretty high for the amount of people tested and diagnosed as having sleep apnea.

I don't think that is the case. The reason they almost all if not all of them get one, is because that is the reason they are there to begin with, someone has told them they snore, they stop breathing, they are tired ALL of the time, fall asleep while at their desk....etc.etc.etc. They are there for those reason so IMO that is why they all get one. I'm pretty sure people with no symptoms would not need to go :)

You obviously dont have any experience with it and have zero background on sleep apnea, but still feel the need to come in and throw your 2 cents:

"I have slept all my life and if they told me I needed one, I would be suspicious of their analysis. I don’t know how anyone could sleep better wearing a mask with tubes and a ventilator…"

Why would you be suspicious of a sleep specialist? And not sure how anyone could sleep better wearing a mask, tubes, ventilator? You are clueless man. Period.

Enlighten me (this doesn't mean posting a picture of your raghorn).

Check post #66. So you don’t find it somewhat alarming that 100% of patients are diagnosed with sleep apnea?

Because I am skeptical, I have no opinion according to you. Elk pictures are a great way to make your point even better. You really are in no position to criticize an observation that differs from your experience.

Where does it say only comments parallel to your opinion are acceptable?

Drs have a really good chance of knowing whether or not you even need a sleep study when you sleep a night with pulse/oximeter. That showed my dr that I was having 90+ episodes per hour. I never took the sleep study cuz I didn’t want to pay the $X amount of money and it was quite obvious I had sleep apnea. Had I taken the study, boom, I’d be part of the 100%. You can be skeptical about it, but you prolly aren’t gonna sway many people in this thread that it isn’t real.

Go read post 68 :)

I did see that and 71 too. I am not here to say there isn’t call for CPAP, it just seems the rate of diagnosis seemed extraordinarily high.
My guess is that people don’t like to go knowing if they have it they’ll spend a lot of money on supplies and sleep with something attached to their face. I waited 3-4 years too long to go. By the time I went, it was completely obvious I had it.

I've seen several leave without a sleep diagnosis. A lot of military members get tested.

"IF" the doctor is only referring patients that display obvious symptoms of SA it could easily be 100%. Without knowing how he does business is just a rumor.

If this statement wasn't utter horse apples, yes it would be alarming.

As someone trying to get a couple folks with CPAPs off the grid, this thread has been super valuable. Thanks all for you're productive contributions.

I went and got my sleep study results. I have all the symptoms, came back as moderate OSA.

The practice I went to is a second practice for a dentist that does lots of elective surgery type stuff. They told me a CPAP wasn't gonna be a good choice for me. It was only 3500 out of pocket and 4K to insurance for them to make me a mouth guard!!

I asked to get a copy of the sleep report that I paid for. Page 2 bullet point #1 was a CPAP or oral appliance would both likely be very effective:ROFLMAO:. I sent my general practitioner a copy of the report and will meet with him next week.

Just talked to a buddy the other day who had a sleep test because his PCP told him he probably had sleep apnea. He took the test and he did not have it. First person I have heard of taking the test and not needing a machine.

If I was his doc I would have told him to cut back on the PCP first then worry about sleep apnea.
