SFC is putting forth some effort this year......

Here are a couple more pics...the first is me moving up to the tree where I took the shot. Dave took the pic from behind and you can see the deer if you look off to my right. When I shot she had turned a bit so she was quartering to me instead of straight ahead. Went in front shoulder and out about the third rib. The second pic is me and the MR loaded up with the Caribou bags. All 4 quarter in 2 elk quarter bags, another bag for all of the lose meat and her head in a 3rd bag (had to turn into CPW for testing).

Got final word a couple of days ago that my big game exploits for the year are officially done :( The hunt in NM was a bit iffy to begin with and some admin changes in the group I was supposed to go with means no joy for me and CPO on that one. It would have been a chance of a lifetime but I never fully invested in it so the sting is tempered.....somewhat. I have one goose hunt scheduled for sure in FEB(will try for a few more waterfowl outings) and will be going to IN in FEB to take another Vet on a private reserve whitetail hunt with AHIA (I will write that one up when it happens). I went 3-5 on my tags this year (3-4 on trips) so I am very happy with that. I heard from Lee last week he told me my muntjac head will be headed this way after Christmas and got a preview of what it looks like. Have to say it is pretty cool and I will post pics when it arrives.

Well, today I was fixing the cord on a DeWalt grinder I was given for free because it was "broke" :) when one of my Army buddies shoot me a text...."Wanna go goose hunting this weekend?" ......Well yes, YES I do!! Time to chase some honkers near Greely and hang with a brother I have known for almost 20 years and am proud to call Doc ;) Wooohooo for the bonus hunt out of the blue!! (I still have a scheduled goose hunt first of FEB in that same area).

In the pit.....a couple of small flyovers so far.

The afternoon was not epic but was better. In the last 30 min we finally had a couple of flicks deek a little. I got legit pieces of 4 birds of the 10 we ended with . As shooting light ended and we were out collecting geese. We start to hear quacks.....within 10 minutes we had THOUSANDS of mallards circling above us.....for the entire time we were picking up the deek spread. Yes, I did in fact give them the universal salute ;)

Well, Sunday the decision was made to wait until the afternoon to hunt after lunch due to the flight patterns of the birds. The birds that were around were not migrating through but were at least semi-resident birds simply going from roosts to feed and back. That movement was happening in the last 45 minutes. We had a good lunch at Bruce's, watched a little of the early game and headed out. On the way out we passed a BIG roost and were hoping for the to head to the field we would be in. The spread for the day was about 40 dozen full bodies. We saw only a couple of high flying waaaay off flocks that had no interest is us. finally with about 30 min left we had a few flocks get close, take a couple of laps around and then think better of it. You could definitely tell these jokers have been shot at. Then with about 10 minutes to go a small portion of one of the flocks (about 10 birds or so) broke off and decoyed. We got about 6 of them in front of us with the rest behind. We ended ups with 2 birds. Again, not great but better than nothing :) Once again, 10 minutes after shooting light, as we were pulling decoys there were birds everywhere .....son of a ......... ;)
