My dad wants to do an archery elk hunt, and I'm looking for advice on places to go or a reputable outfitter to book a hunt with. We are currently planning on 2027 during the week of labor day because that's the best time for all of us (my dad, brother, and I) to coordinate time off. I have a few points in CO, none in MT, and 9 in WY. They don't have any points in any western state. My dad has been out west before and shot a few elk and deer in Colorado back in the 90s-early 2000s on semi-guided hunts, but always with a rifle. He expressed interest in doing an archery hunt, and my brother and my dad came out to the PNW for archery elk this year, but the places that I could find elk out here this year were pretty gnarly, too gnarly for my dad to hunt now with bad knees. And he wouldn't say it, but I think he really just didn't like hunting elk in the jungle as much as he liked Colorado. I think anywhere in MT/NM/CO would be fine with him though, as long as the terrain isn't too rough.
Ideally, I think we are looking for a semi-guided/trespass fee type hunt on private, but I am open to other options including fully guided as long as the price stays at or below ~7500 per person. I would be interested in doing a backcountry horse pack-in type hunt (particularly with our planned early September dates, could be real hot down low), but they are both hesitant to commit to that. I may still try to convince them because I think it could be an awesome experience for him, but I'm currently planning as if that's not an option. Basically I would have to have a really good outfitter that I trusted lined up, then I would argue my case. It seems like some type of cabin/lodge/airbnb type accomodations would be more up their alley. Anyone have any thoughts, experiences, or recommendations for a hunt of this style? I have scanned through a bunch of threads on this topic and some of them were helpful (notably, the one posted by fulldraw earlier this year), but I figured it wouldn't hurt to post this up with our specific situation.
