Sask elk down!

Been bow hunting this area for a couple weeks seeing mostly cows with the odd bull. September 14th the night before rifle season opened I saw a cow and raghorn feed in this hay field at last light. Snuck in this morning nothing and then a rainstorm hit so I left. Tonight I was back out there. Was a beauty night cold and calm. About 15 minutes before the end of legal I thought I heard a cow chirp. I waited a few minutes and nothing came out so I let out a few cow chirps. There was a grouse rustling in the grass behind me so I was looking that way a bit. A few minutes later I looked back and there was a spike elk 30 or so yards behind me where I never expected an elk to come from. Tried to grab the gun and turn around slowly but he busted me so I ran out of the small bluff I was hiding in. He was less then 100 yards and I took a running shot that I some how wiffed. He got in a low spot and as soon as he got back into view he stopped luckily. Went to shoot click. For some reason my brass got stuck on my ejector and had gone back in the chamber. Quickly got that cleared he was still there offhand at about 120 yards boom whap and he folded up like a cheap tent.

I didn’t have any retrieval stuff with me like a trailer so had to run home for the trailer. Because I dumped him in a hayfield drove right up to him unhooked the trailer put a block in front of the trailer tire hooked onto the elk with a tow rope and pulled him onto the trailer. Even brought the wife and 5 week old baby along for her first elk experience. He’s in the cooler now and can hang for 10 days then I’ll cut him. So happy to have filled the freezer again this fall

I always say I’m going to shoot a big 6 point bull but any spike in front of me should be nervous.

Never passed a legal bull in the otc area and not going to start. Might only see one
