I grew up in the gorge. Stevenson gets 60-80" of rain a year. It's miserable most of the year. And there is a 10x difference between now and 15 years ago. The woods are crowded. Portland "found it "

Portland is a short cheap flight from Boise. Maybe an hour, max.
I know. I’ve been to Portland several times on business including in May. I’d pick elsewhere in Oregon, like Eastern Oregon.

We flew into Portland and then drove down the Netarts. I think you could probably easily get crabs if you take a wrong turn after navigating through there for the first time.

Man, the Willamette valley isn't getting enough love. It's beautiful. The rivers that flow from the westside of the cascades are incredible from the Molalla to all the Santiams, the Sandy and Clackamas, the McKenzie and Willamette. And the rolling oak topped hills with snowy peaks in the background, and the coast only an hour over the hill.

I haven't really decided. I just know that in any big city, my wife and I would be miserable. I live about 60 miles from Houston and it's still too damn close.

I'm about as far east as you can go in Oregon and live pretty rural with my nearest town less than 200 population. Portland is 350 miles from me. Over my way I like Baker City for a larger place. Population of a little over 10,000. Has just about all a person needs with medical specialists not too awful far away in Boise. I've only traveled through there on my way to the coast but I agree with post #70 if that would suit you better. Seemed like some really peaceful little settlements over that way.

I live near Pacific City on the coast and it’s a pretty popular place to retire. Very small town with limited services. Feel free to send a message if you want any specific details about this part of Oregon. The coast isn’t for everybody but it has a lot of positives for an outdoor lifestyle.

Wife drew the Juniper Premium antelope tag one year. Great experience. The only person we saw was the cow water truck driver.
But that dust is the real deal.

I like the stretch along 395 between Trout Creek and Seneca, also Prairie City and Elgin are real high on my list. But if the OP is wanting to be close to his family, I would stick with 1.5 hr of Portlandia.
