If I was going to retire into anchorage I’d be working on getting a cub and license to fly it now. Anything that’s easily accessible is hunted heavy.

And yet those easily accessible critters, thrive where Predation is is limited by people activity. Cub is air taxi to most anywhere.

In my mind, it you ever wanted to experience Alaska, beyond just a vacation, then a 3 year commitment would certainly allow you to know if you love it or hate it. My Stepson spent Covid in the Barracks at JBER but enjoyed turning 21 in Anchorage. My archery buddy has a hardware store in Talkeetna. He's a 2nd generation resident and takes the seasonality of day length in stride. All of the Coast Guard families I talk with fondly remember their time in Kodiak, although they seem to universally have struggled financially, had young children, and found joy in free recreation outdoors.

I think about the saying, "it won't be easy but it will be worth it" and I feel it could apply here. If you don't do it now, will you ever take that chance in the future?
