And in limited entry units on a general tag. Would be really easy to get away with…I'd really like to know how many animals are killed on private without valid tags each year in Montana.

Are you referring to the unrecovered animal part? I don’t think people would claim they lost an animal if they hadn’t. I’m also not sure why people would be afraid to admit they lost an animal in an anonymous survey, but even if that was the case, I think less than perfect data is better than no data at all.
After one season with the north end 380 cow tag, I avoid the Elkhorns at all cost. But I spent a bunch of time there that fall and live like 2 miles from the National Forest boundary, and I've never seen a game warden there. Seems like you have to poach 10+ animals and at least a few off private to start to raise any red flags, based on the most recent bust of the 4 guys from Helena/Bozeman.
Actually a good friend is a higher up at the Golden Sunlight mine, he received a call from FWP that they busted a guy who poached THREE bulls in 380.
