Plate ‘em up

Actually sounds like a really good combo, suprisingly.

Made the chili first and then the cinnamon rolls. They go together perfect in my opinion. Lots of school districts in montana serve them together. Or at least when I was younger they did.
My parents grew up in South Dakota. I grew up in Illinois. So I was always confused why we were the only family that always had cinnamon rolls and chili. Asked mom about it and she said that was how they had it in school.

Did some research and the story is that back in the late 40s early 50s the USDA was asked to write up some example menus for school districts and each district of the USDA assigned different people to the task. Whoever was in charge of the district that covered SD, ND, Nebraska, Parts of MN, WY and MT put chili and cinnamon rolls on the example menu.

Rather than being examples, the menus were just adopted by the school districts and now you have a regional cuisine that in my estimation is a perfect combo.

That’s a great little piece of info. Thanks for sharing.

Add Idaho to that list… those two always were served together

I would be interested in the potato salad recipe if it is not a protected family secret?
I asked her if she had a recipe written down and she said "yeah, sort of". She has a list of things and then cooks and adjusts to taste. No hard and fast recipe to go from. I do know that it's not always quite the same as far as how thick or runny it is from batch to batch. Sorry, not much help.

I always ask both my grandmas (well I did anyway) and that was the same response. Done it so many times they never wrote anything down. Thats the good stuff.

My Grandmother's did the same. I do have some handwritten jerky and sausage recipes from my Grandfather and a friend of his. Old Norwegians. And a German. mtmuley
