PERMIT NO. 001

I stepped inches from a black-tailed rattlesnake while elk hunting in NM. It had every opportunity to bite me and would have been 100% justified in doing so. Instead, it just buzzed its tail and let me continue on my way. In return I let him, and a few of his buddies that were around him, continue on with their day, and promised to never kill a rattler. The one I saw was very gray/silver. Not nearly as pretty as this one from AZ.

Congrats, if you want any tips let me know. I know that area pretty well.

Preseason scouting officially over. I’ve put nearly 400 miles on my 32 year old little quad. Drove a ton of roads/trails, checked a billion tanks and checked off the dry ones and picked a handful of interesting ones. Found some decent glassing points, but glassing here is not the greatest. They are finally starting to talk a little bit in the hills. I e paid attention to where I’ve seen cows. 12 days and no prospects yet. Saw my first obviously elk guides out last night glassing. Setting up a blind today, for tomorrow. Fun is on the menu! The best plans are last minute plans? 🙂

Glad to see you have had some bugeling. In 3 days scouting up here by Flagstaff I’ve heard only a handful. Saw a decent bull last night all by himself. They are not quite ready yet here.

Bulls around my house were finally sounding off last night. Still won’t bugle back to me but I suck at bugling.
